Radio broadcaster shot dead in Philippines

Manila, May 31 (EFE).- A radio broadcaster was shot dead early Wednesday morning in the Philippines, in the latest case of violence against journalists in the country.

Cresenciano Bunduquin, 50, who hosted a program on a radio station in the city of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro province, was shot in front of a store by two gunmen on a motorcycle around 4.30 am (20:30 GMT), police and provincial authorities confirmed to EFE.

“Individuals on a motorcycle (…) pulled up to the store, and one of them approached and shot the victim. The victim was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival,” said a statement by the Public Information Office of Oriental Mindoro.

Police have launched a “thorough investigation” into the murder, it said.

One of the suspects died in an accident while being pursued on the motorbike after the incident, while the other remains on the run, the Public Information Office told EFE.

This is the third murder of a journalist since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. came to power in June last year.

The Southeast Asian archipelago has one of the highest murder rates for journalists in the world. EFE
