New Memphis Art Studio Open to Everyone

MEMPHIS (LPL) — Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to paint, draw, mosaic, sculpt, create. This is the philosophy behind Memphis’ newest art venue, Flicker Street Studio. Flicker Street Studio opened earlier this year to expand the opportunities in the already vibrant Memphis arts community. “Memphis’ Art School for Everyone,” brings a range of classes to the general public.
“Our mission at Flicker Street Studio is to promote a challenging atmosphere for creative curiosity, and instill desire and confidence to learn more,” says founder and director Nancy Cheairs. Cheairs is an established Memphis artist with degrees from both Memphis College of Art and the University of Memphis.
In addition to running the studio Cheairs teaches Life Drawing and Watercolor classes there. “I believe that by asking more questions rather than providing answers cultivates an atmosphere of curiosity and inquisitiveness in the classroom that will promote a desire for further exploration.” She looks for teachers with a similar openness. Maysey Craddock teaches a very accessible and fun wire sculpture class in which students explore line and volume with simple materials. Colleen Couch-Smith teaches the Art of Bookmaking, Melissa Dunn teaches Introduction to Acrylic Painting and Mary Jo Karimnia will teach Creative Mosaicing. Anna Wunderlich promotes exploration with the younger sect in Kids After School Art.
Erin Wright taught a class in the wax-based medium Encaustic over the summer. The studio also hosted a show of Erin’s work in June. Cheairs hopes to host other artists’ work regularly in the space as well.
New classes are introduced regularly and the Fall schedule has just come out. For details and dates of classes check the studio’s website at www.flickerstreetstudio.com and call (901)767-2999 to enroll.
The studio also hosts art openings. Most recently was Nonsensical Nostalgia, Encaustic work by Erin Wright.
