Musicians Boycott Arizona

MEMPHIS (LPL) — ‘Sound Strike’ es un boicot organizado por el cantante de ‘Rage Against the Machine’, Zack de la Rocha. ‘Sound Strike’ apela a los músicos de todos géneros para boicotear Arizona en protesta contra la ley de inmigración SB. ‘Sound Strike’ empezó en mayo, un poco después de que la SB 1070 fue aprobada. MEMPHIS (LPL) — The Sound Strike is a boycott organized by Rage Against the Machine singer Zack de la Rocha. Sound Strike calls on musicians from all genres to boycott Arizona in protest against the immigration law SB 1070. Sound Strike began in May, soon after SB 1070 was passed. The boycott, in a press release by Rocha, asks for “artists all over the world to stand with us, and not allow our collective economic power to be used to aid and abet civil and human rights violations that will be caused by Arizona’s odious law.”

Many different artists have joined Sound Strike, including Sonic Youth, Kayne West, Nine Inch Nails, Maroon 5, Los Tigres del Norte, and, most recently, Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo, who recently released a protest song called ‘One Heart One Beat.’ Many of the artists have set up benefit concerts as well, with the proceeds going towards organizations that are fighting against SB 1070. One such concert was one held on July 23rd by Rage Against the Machine and Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band in Los Angeles, CA. Proceeds from this concert, along with donations from the Sound Strike fund, have reached roughly $300,000.  These funds will provide much needed resources to organizations such as The Florence Project, that provides free legal services to people detained in Arizona for immigration removal proceedings.

The Better Business Bureau And Southwest Community College Announce a New Partnership.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — El Colegio Comunitario de Southwest y el Better Business Bureau (BBB) anuncian que han formado una asociación para educar a la comunidad de Southwest (estudiantes, alumnos, facultad y personal administrativo) sobre cómo tomar buenas decisiones de compra y cómo evitar fraudes.

“El la difícil economía de hoy, es más importante que nunca que los consumidores de todas las edades conozcan las empresas antes de gastar el dinero que con tantos trabajos ganan”, dijo Randy Hutchinson, Presidente de BBB. “También queremos ayudar a los miembros de la comunidad de Southwest a evitar el creciente número de fraudes que sufren más de 30 millones de estadounidenses cada año”.

El BBB realizará talleres sobre robo de identidad, fraude al consumidor y otros temas para los estudiantes de los dos campi de Southwest. MEMPHIS (LPL) — Southwest Tennessee Community College and the BBB have formed a partnership to educate the Southwest community (students, alumni, faculty and staff) on how to make good buying decisions and avoid scams.

“In today’s difficult economy, it’s more important than ever for consumers of all ages to check out businesses before spending their hard-earned dollars,” said Randy Hutchinson, President of the BBB. “We also want to help members of the Southwest community avoid the increasing number of scams that victimize over 30 million Americans every year.”

The BBB will present workshops on identity theft, consumer scams and other topics to students at both of Southwest’s campuses. Southwest’s Career Services Director, Brenda Williams, said, “Southwest is always looking for ways to prepare students to meet the challenges associated with entering the workforce. Partnering with the BBB allows us to do just that by helping students to become more informed consumers.”

“The BBB will also provide articles for the Southwest SCOOP, an online newsletter for faculty and staff,” said Robert Miller, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing for Southwest. Miller also stated that, “Southwest and the BBB are exploring other opportunities to collaborate in protecting the college’s community from scams and unethical companies.”

MEMPHIS (LPL) — ArtsMemphis announces $1,905,553 in funding support to 21 area arts organizations for the 2011 fiscal year. This is an increase of nearly 5 percent over last year’s grants to these same organizations.  Annual grants are the cornerstone of ArtsMemphis’ mission and are a direct result of financial support given to ArtsMemphis from individual donors, businesses and foundations.

In addition to its annual fundraising efforts, ArtsMemphis is pleased to announce a three-year grant award totaling $600,000 from the Plough Foundation. The Plough Foundation funding demonstrates its commitment to the arts and is a response to the weakened charitable giving that has affected arts and culture organizations across the country. Funds from this grant are being used to increase annual funding for the arts.

In addition to the Plough Foundation grant, ArtsMemphis received generous support from corporations and foundations including AutoZone, First Tennessee, FedEx, the Hyde Family Foundations, Tennessee Arts Commission, the Assisi Foundation and the Jeniam Foundation.

“We have not been immune to the financial downturn that affected nonprofit organizations across the country. Each of our funded groups has faced its own obstacles in this respect and has slashed budgets accordingly,” says ArtsMemphis President & CEO Susan Schadt. “Therefore, their need is even greater for ArtsMemphis to maintain and even increase the amount of support that we are able to pass onto them. We are grateful to the Plough Foundation for their generosity and vision, especially when the need is so significant.”

Stand for Children wants to improve education in Memphis

MEMPHIS (LPL) — ‘Stand for Children’ es un grupo de apoyo imparcial para la educación igualitaria para los niños en todos los EE.UU. ‘Stand for Children’ es una organización nacional con muchos capítulos, incluyendo el de Memphis. La organización trabaja para informar a la gente sobre lo que está pasando con la educación en sus ciudades. La organización aprueba y ayuda a elegir a candidatos a las mesas directivas de los distritos escolares. Asimismo, ‘Stand for Children’ hace de “guardián”, porque se aseguran que los fondos asignados para la educación sean usados adecuadamente.

Uno de los éxitos de ‘Stand for Children’ es su contribución a la victoria de Tennessee en el programa presidencial ‘Race to the Top’. 41 estados aplicaron y solamente dos ganaron. MEMPHIS (LPL) — Stand for Children is a nonpartisan advocacy group for fair education for children all over the United States. Stand for Children is a national organization with with many locations, including Memphis. The organization works to try to inform people about what’s going on with education in their cities They also endorse and help to elect promising candidates to school-boards. Stand for Children also acts as a watchdog of sorts, making sure the funds allocated for education are used appropriately.

One of Stand for Children’s many successes is its contribution to Tennessee’s win in the Race to the Top program. 41 states applied for this program and only two won. Tennessee will receive upward of $500,000,000, with $68,000,000 of the money going to Memphis. “The money will be used for ‘principal effectiveness’ – which teaches the principal to be more effective and how to lead their team – as well as making longer school days for schools that are struggling and Pre-K programs,” said Ryan Tracy, a represenitive for the Memphis chapter of Stand for Children, in an interview with La Prensa Latina. Tracy spoke also of the dismal view of education in Tennessee and what their organization is doing to fix it. “We’ve accepted this and made excuses, like ‘If a kid comes from poverty, then they’re going to stay in poverty,’ and what our organization says is that all kids deserve a fair chance at education and deserve a good teacher,” says Tracy.

Stand for Children cannot improve things on their own, however, and Stand for Children is looking for more community involvement.. To help kickstart this, Tracy is holding a meeting for bilingual Latino parents who want to become involved or address concerns they might have. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal checks could begin flowing again as early as next week to millions of jobless people who lost up to seven weeks of unemployment benefits in a congressional standoff. President Barack Obama on Thursday (Jul. 22) signed into law a restoration of benefits for people who have been out of work for six months or more. Congress approved the measure earlier in the day. The move ended an interruption that cut off payments averaging about $300 a week to 2 1/2 million people who have been unable to find work in the aftermath of the nation’s long and deep recession.

A Federal Matter

De acuerdo con el gobierno federal, la potestad para regular la inmigración es un asunto que le compete por derecho propio. No obstante esta premisa, en los Estados Unidos y, contrario a los argumentos del gobierno federal de que si se le permite a Arizona seguir adelante con la controversial SB 1070, se estaría abriendo el camino para que se tenga una serie de medidas localmente instituidas para lidiar con este problema, convirtiendo a los Estados Unidos en una miríada de medidas diversificadas y con diferentes propósitos. Sin embargo, en la realidad eso es lo que ya está ocurriendo. En Tennessee se ha firmado una ley muy parecida a la de Arizona sin tantos reflectores. Diversas ciudades y condados del país tienen sus propias reglas para lidiar con el problema, p.e. hay ciudades que no permiten rentar vivienda a indocumentados, otras no quieren que sus industrias locales les contraten. Otras más llaman a inmigración cuando detienen a alguien sin documentos. En fin, el desorden regulatorio está ya presente. Pero no parece claro que los políticos en Washington estén muy apurados para realizar una reforma migratoria que traiga orden, ofrezca soluciones y acabe con toda la palabrería hueca de estos tiempos electorales.

According to the Federal Government, the power to regulate immigration is an issue that would apply to them only. Despite this premise, the United States and, contrary to the federal government’s argument that if Arizona is allowed to go ahead with the controversial SB 1070, it will be opening the way for a series of measures to be instituted locally to deal with this problem, making the United States in a myriad of diversified measures and for different purposes. However, in reality this is what is happening. Tennessee has signed a law very similar to Arizona without so many spotlights. Several cities and counties in the country have their own rules to deal with the problem, e.g. there are cities that do not allow renting housing to illegal immigrants, and others do not want their local industries to hire them. Still others call immigration when they stop someone without documents. Finally, the regulatory disorder is already present. But it does not seem clear that politicians in Washington are too hurried to make a comprehensive immigration reform that brings order, which offer solutions, and that end with all those empty words of this election time.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — Considered by many equestrians to be more important than the Olympics, the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) will take place in Lexington, Kentucky, the first time the Games has ever been hosted by a country outside of Europe. From September 25^th until October 10^th, Kentucky will be flooded with horse-lovers from all over the world. More than 50 different nations will compete in dressage, para dressage, combined driving, endurance riding, eventing, showjumping, vaulting and reining. For the first time ever, all these different events will be held in one venue – the world-famous Kentucky Horse Park (KHP). In preparation for the Games, the KHP has undergone drastic renovation, adding a huge new indoor area as well as many other projects to improve the park. The anticipated ticket sales for the games is somewhere around 600,000. The Games are expected to have a huge impact on Kentucky’s economy, with a predicted impact of $150,000,000 from ticket sales as well as business for local hotels, restaurants and stores.

The eight events featured in WEG will test some very different skills. Dressage – a word that means “training” in French – is truly a dance between horse and rider. In the Grand Prix competitions, each competitor will perform the same test (a combination of certain movements and gaits) while the judges look at the movement of the horse, the precision of the movements, and the harmony between horse and rider. In the Musical Freestyle – one of the most anticipated events of the Games – each competitor will perform an independently choreographed routine set to music. Para dressage will test the same skills, except it will feature riders who have physical disabilities. This will be the first time that para dressage has ever been part of the WEG. In combined driving, the drivers have to compete with a team of four horses in driven dressage, marathon and obstacle course driving. Driven dressage will test many of the same qualities as ridden dressage, marathon tests the horse’s fitness, and obstacle course will test their obedience as the drivers have to manipulate their horses through a timed course of obstacles, such as through a twisting course of cones that are set close together with balls balanced on top of them, with penalties occurred for going too slow, knocking a ball off the cone, etc. Endurance riding will test the endurance abilities of the competitors, requiring them to ride 100 miles in the shortest time possible, with compulsory stops for fitness checks. Eventing is an all-around test of the competitors, requiring them to compete – over three days – a dressage test to test their training, a cross-country course (30 or so solid jumps) to test their fitness, and a showjumping course to show the horses willingness to continue after a hard day of cross-country the day before. Showjumping is a course of brightly colored, easily knocked down jumps – some at heights up to 5 or even 6 feet – which the competitors must complete as quickly as possible, with penalties given for knocking down a rail or going too slowly. Vaulting – which is often called “gymnastics on horseback” – requires the competitors perform many acrobatic feats, all while on the back of a moving horse. Reining – the only Western event in the WEG – requires the competitors to show their training by performing patterns that include such exciting movements as 360 degree spins and sliding stops.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — El Fiscal de Distrito para el Condado de Shelby, Bill Gibbons, y el Director de la Policía de Memphis, Larry Godwin, anunciaron este lunes (Jul. 19) que la policía había asegurado y puesto candados al club nocturno de la zona conocida como Hickory Hill dado que la policía fue llamada 179 ocasiones en los pasados 10 meses por un abrumador número de serios, y a veces, violentos incidentes.

El pasado viernes, la oficina de la Fiscalía de Distrito estableció una acción pública en contra de los dueños y operadores de Visiones Sports Bar and Grill, también conocido como ‘Club Visiones’ por ‘molestias a la comunidad’.

La acción por ‘molestias a la comunidad’ fue emitida contra ‘Club Visions’, localizado en el 3684 Ridgeway Road, después de que una investigación de la policía de Memphis llevada a cabo debido a las numerosas quejas de ciudadanos y de negocios adyacentes.

NUMEROUS VIOLENT INCIDENTS, ILLICIT DRUG SALES AND USE, CONCERN FOR CITIZENS’ SAFETY RESULTED IN CLOSURE OF HICKORY HILL CLUB

MEMPHIS, TN – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons and Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin announced Monday that police had secured and padlocked a Hickory Hill night club that police have been called to more than 150 times over the past 10 months for an overwhelming number of serious and sometimes violent incidents. 

The District Attorney’s Office last Friday filed a public nuisance action against the owners and operators of the Visions Sports Bar and Grill, also known as “Club Visions.”  The nuisance action was filed against “Club Visions,” located at 3684 Ridgeway Road, after a Memphis police investigation prompted by numerous complaints from citizens and nearby businesses.

The club was secured and padlocked during the early morning hours of Monday, July 19.  Approximately 800 patrons were present when Memphis police arrived to secure the premises.  Undercover officers had made four additional purchases of marijuana earlier in the evening. A number of patrons were arrested based on outstanding warrants against them.

Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter ordered “Club Visions” temporarily closed and secured.  The judge ordered the owners and operators to court for a hearing at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21 to answer to the allegations in the petition.

The investigation by the Memphis Police Department included three major components: a record of numerous criminal incidents and disturbances at the club over the past year; an undercover vice operation to observe activity inside the club; and an operation by the Memphis Police Department’s Undercover Operations Unit in which undercover officers not only observed criminal and nuisance activity inside the club, but also purchased narcotics from individuals inside the club.

The following specifics were outlined in the petition filed in this case:

•           Between September 7, 2009 and July 4, 2010, officers have been called to “Club Visions” at least 179 times.  The calls included shootings, stabbings, other types of wounds, robberies and fights.  Officers have arrested 73 people at the club for numerous violent and drug-related crimes.

•           Memphis Police Department’s undercover unit visited the club on numerous occasions and each time noticed the pervasive odor of marijuana and observed individuals throughout “Club Visions” smoking and preparing marijuana for smoking throughout the club.  Officers observed this activity in front of security and other club personnel.  In all, officers observed at least 166 individuals within the club either smoking or rolling marijuana. On several occasions, undercover officers purchased marijuana from individuals inside the club.

•           Undercover officers have observed open congregation of apparent gang members on the club’s stage.  This included the displaying of gang “colors.”

•           The club hosts a weekly “female boxing” event that is unlicensed despite requirements by the Tennessee Athletic Commission and other relevant agencies. Undercover officers have witnessed this event which devolved into a public sexual display with patrons throwing money on the stage. It also turned into a crowd-involved fight.

“We contend this club is a danger to the community,” said District Attorney Bill Gibbons.  “From violence, to rampant drug use, to large unruly crowds, ‘Club Visions’ is clearly a public nuisance and needs to be closed,” Gibbons stressed.

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin stated, “There are responsibilities that accompany the ownership and management of an establishment such as Club Visions.  The Memphis Police Department and District Attorney’s Office will continue to ensure that these responsibilities are fulfilled.  Businesses will be held accountable for the environment which they create, encourage and promote.”

“Establishments which accommodate behavior which threatens the well being of our communities and endangers society will not be tolerated,” Director Godwin stated.  “The men and women of the MPD will continue to fight for their community.  The work of Memphis’ Finest is the primary cause for the drastic reduction in crime in Memphis over the last 4 years,” he said.

Tennessee law states that the District Attorney General has authority to bring a civil action against any establishment deemed a nuisance.  The statute defines a nuisance, in part, as “any place in or upon which… unlawful sale of any regulated legend drug, narcotic or other controlled substance…quarrelling, drunkenness, fighting, or breaches of the peace are carried on or permitted.”

The D.A.’s Office, working with investigations by the Memphis Police Department and as part of Operation Blue CRUSH™, has filed nuisance petitions against the owners of more than 200 properties, both residential and businesses, under the Tennessee nuisance law.  Some nuisance actions have resulted in permanent closure of the properties.  Others have reopened under consent orders to alleviate the nuisance.

Solamente un republicano votó con los demócratas para aprobar la nominación de Kagan y enviarla al pleno del senado, donde se espera que Kagan obtenga la confirmación dentro de pocas semanas.

Si fuese confirmada, Kagan sería la cuarta mujer en servir en la Suprema Corte y su presencia marcaría la primera vez que tres mujeres han servido juntas en el tribunal supremo conformado por nueve miembros. Los jueces a menudo sirven de por vida y, por lo tanto, su influencia se puede extender más allá del término del presidente que los propone.

El debate sobre su nominación se ha desarrollado en contra de un ambiente muy partisano, en una época en la que los republicanos quieren hacer distinciones claras entre ellos y Obama, cuyos índices de aprobación están descendiendo a un poco más de 100 días antes las elecciones en noviembre.

“Se hace más y más evidente que necesitamos un regreso al centro y ella es una jueza que va a instar a la moderación y quién va a promocionar el consenso. El récord de Elena Kagan me da la confianza de que ella puede ser esta voz”, dijo la senadora Dianne Feinstein, una demócrata.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With hopes for an election-year Supreme Court confirmation vote, a polarized U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday approved Elena Kagan to be the third current female justice.

Just one Republican joined Democrats to approve Kagan’s nomination and send it to the full Senate, where she is expected to win confirmation within weeks.

If confirmed, Kagan would be the fourth woman to serve on the court and her swearing-in would mark the first time that three women have served together on the nine-member Supreme Court. Justices often serve for life so their influence can extend well beyond the president who nominates them.

The debate over her nomination has unfolded against a highly partisan backdrop, at a time when Republicans are focused on making sharp distinctions between themselves and Obama, who approval ratings are sagging little more than 100 days out from November elections.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican, broke with his party to cast the sole Republican “yes” vote on President Barack Obama’s nominee to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens. The vote was 13-6.

“What’s in Elena Kagan’s heart is that of a good person who adopts a philosophy I disagree with,” Graham said. “She will serve this nation honorably, and it would not have been someone I would have chosen, but the person who did choose, President Obama, I think chose wisely.”

A few more Republicans are expected likely to back Kagan in the full Senate, where Democrats have more than enough votes to confirm her.

But most Republcian senators are against her, arguing that she would put her political views ahead of the law. They point to what they call her liberal agenda and on such issues as abortion and gun rights, and have chastised her for the decision as dean of Harvard Law School to bar military recruiters from the campus career services office because of the policy against openly gay soldiers.

“Ms. Kagan’s record shows that she supports an activist judicial philosophy, and that her personal and political views drive her legal views,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican.

Democrats praised Kagan, the woman who has served as the Obama administration’s solicitor general, calling her a highly qualified glass ceiling-shattering nominee who could bring consensus to an ideologically divided court.

“It becomes more and more apparent that we need a return to the center and a justice who will urge moderation and who will push for consensus. Elena Kagan’s record gives me confidence that she could be just such a voice,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat.

Republicans have been quicker to announce their opposition to Kagan than they were last year to Obama’s first high court nominee, Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Graham is the only Republican so far to say he’ll vote “yes.”

Democrats attributed the difference to political considerations by the Republicans.

“Sadly, it appears election-year politics may deprive her of the vote total that her nomination deserves,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, a leading Democrat.

CIUDAD JUAREZ (AP) — Los narcotraficantes que orquestaron el primer atentado exitoso con coche bomba contra agentes mexicanos probablemente usaron un explosivo industrial que anteriormente ha sido robado a compañías privadas, dijo el lunes (Jul. 19) un funcionario estadounidense.

Los atacantes aparentemente usaron Tovex, un explosivo gelatinoso utilizado comúnmente como sustituto de la dinamita en la minería y otras actividades industriales, dijo el funcionario, quien está familiarizado con la pesquisa pero habló a condición de guardar el anonimato porque no está autorizado a hacer declaraciones sobre ésta, la cual es encabezada por las autoridades mexicanas.

El funcionario de Estados Unidos no tenía detalles de cómo se armó la bomba, y las autoridades en México no quisieron comentar al respecto.

El automóvil con el artefacto explosivo mató el jueves a tres personas—incluido un policía federal—en la urbe fronteriza de Ciudad Juárez, introduciendo así una nueva estrategia letal en la guerra contra las drogas en México.

Las autoridades mexicanas dijeron que los atacantes atrajeron a policías y paramédicos a la escena mediante un elaborado ardid que parecía extraído del libro de texto de al-Qaida: una pandilla vinculada al cartel de Juárez le puso un uniforme de policía a un hombre herido y maniatado, y posteriormente llamó a las autoridades para reportar que había un agente lesionado.

El FBI y la Oficina de Control de Alcohol, Armas de Fuego y Explosivos están auxiliando a los mexicanos en la pesquisa en torno al coche bomba.

Un mensaje escrito en un muro el lunes decía que habrá otro carro bomba a menos que funcionarios “federales corruptos” sean arrestados en 15 días. El mensaje dirigía su amenaza al FBI y a la agencia antinarcóticos estadounidense (DEA, por sus siglas en inglés), y exigía una investigación contra funcionarios de justicia mexicanos que “apoyan al cartel de Sinaloa”.

No hubo manera inmediata de verificar la autenticidad del mensaje, similar a otro, firmado por el Cartel de Juárez, en que se amenaza a “las autoridades” que “sigan apoyando al Chapo”, en referencia al líder del grupo sinaloense, Joaquín Guzmán, apodado “El Chapo”.

El cartel de Sinaloa, una de las organizaciones del narcotráfico más poderosas del mundo, ha estado luchando contra el cartel de Juárez desde hace casi dos años por el control de Ciudad Juárez.

“Esto está a un nivel totalmente nuevo”, dijo Tony Payan, de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, analista político y experto en la lucha contra el narcotráfico en México. “Cuando comparas esto con el terrorismo, hay algunas similitudes. El modus operandi es el de un ataque terrorista. Fue diseñado para infundir miedo entre la policía y en la población en general”.

Al día siguiente del atentado, el procurador nacional de justicia, Arturo Chávez, insistió en que no había evidencia de “narcoterrorismo” en México o de algún motivo ideológico detrás del ataque. El lunes, funcionarios de la Procuraduría General de la República declinaron suministrar nueva información sobre la investigación.

Mientras, el gobierno mexicano anunció el lunes el envío de más soldados al estado norteño de Coahuila en respuesta a la matanza ocurrida en una fiesta que dejó 18 muertos y 17 heridos.

La Secretaría de Gobernación afirmó en un comunico que busca “mejorar la articulación de la estrategia de combate a la delincuencia organizada y hacer frente a la dinámica de violencia de las organizaciones criminales”. No precisó cuantos policías federales se enviarán.

El gobierno condenó la víspera los actos violentos ocurridos la madrugada del domingo cuando hombres armados llegaron en varios vehículos a una fiesta en la ciudad coahuilense de Torreón y abrieron fuego contra los presentes sin mediar palabra alguna, precisó la procuraduría estatal.

Sleep Dealer is an exciting movie with a timely message

MEMPHIS (LPL) — Sleep Dealer, de Maya Entertainment, es una película de ciencia ficción dirigida por Alex Rivera. Es tan emocionante que debería ser disfrutada por todos los fanáticos de la ciencia ficción. Con la clasificación de PG-13 debida a escenas de violencia y sexualidad, Sleep Dealer transcurre en un militarizado mundo del futuro cercano.

El protagonista de Sleep Dealer es Memo Cruz (Luis Fernando Peña), un hombre que nació en un pequeño pueblo y quién siempre soñada con la ciudad. Cuando a su padre lo mata un “drone” (avión sin piloto), Memo se va a Tijuana a trabajar, y ahí conoce a la hermosa Luz Martínez (Leonor Varela), una escritora que vende sus recuerdos. Cuando Luz vende su recuerdo del encuentro con Memo, un desconocido la compra y pide más detalles. Luz ayuda Memo con la implantación de sus propios ‘nódulos’ (puertos de datos), los cuáles son vendidos en las callejuelas. Estos ‘nódulos’ permiten a Memo “conectar” y ejecutar trabajos de ínfima importancia (las personas se conectan y controlan a un robot), en secreto, para los norteamericanos; por lo tanto, les proporcionan la situación ideal – “trabajadores mexicanos sin mexicanos.”

El acto de conectar puede tener muchos riesgos, y una oleada de electricidad puede hacer que el usuario quede ciego o aún morir. Mientras tanto, Luz continúa vendiendo sus recuerdos de Memo al desconocido, aún después de que Memo y ella empiezan una relación. Pero el desconocido tiene conexiones con el pasado de Memo, los cuales son revelados en un final emocionante.

La película captura su atención todo el tiempo. Enhorabuena para el director y los actores. El mundo futurista parece bizarro al inicio, pero mientras continúa, la dependencia con la tecnología y las fronteras cerradas se hacen más y más claras. Es muy difícil para no hace un paralelismo entre nuestro mundo y el uno en la película. La película recibió premios en el Festival Sundance y  del Festival de Berlín. Muy recomendable.

Sleep Dealer – a science-fiction film directed by Alex Rivera – is an exciting movie that should be enjoyed by any science-fiction aficionado. Rated PG-13 for some violence and sexuality, Sleep Dealer is set in a near-future, highly militarized world.

Sleep Dealer stars Memo Cruz (Luis Fernando Peña), a man raised in a small village who always dreamed of the city. When his father is killed by a drone, Memo goes to Tijuana to work, where he meets the beautiful Luz Martínez (Leonor Varela), and a writer who sells her memories. When Luz puts up her memory of meeting Memo, a stranger purchases it and requests for more. Luz helps Memo by implanting him with “nodes” (data ports), which are sold in back-alleyways. These nodes allow Memo to “plug in” and perform menial jobs (they plug in and control a robot) from afar for Americans, thus providing them with the ideal situation – “Mexican workers without the Mexicans.” Plugging in is not without its dangers and an electrical surge can cause the user to go blind or even to die. Meanwhile, Luz continues to sell her memories of Memo to this stranger, even after Memo and she begin a relationship. The stranger turns out to have connections to Memo’s past, revealed in an exciting climax.

The movie keeps your attention the whole time, and is well done by the director and actors both. The futuristic world seems bizarre at first, yet as it continues the dependence on technology and the sealed-off borders is recognized, it becomes harder to not draw parallels between our world and the one in the movie.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — Cuando Haití sufrió un devastador terremoto hace seis meses, los pueblos del mundo respondieron efusivamente con dinero y suministros para reparar los daños físicos causados por el temblor y para ayudar a la gente que estaba sufriendo en Haití.

Había también un profundo deseo para mejorar las vidas presentes y futuras de los haitianos, de quiénes se dice viven en el país más pobre del hemisferio occidental. Es esta esperanza de mejorar el futuro que Jean E. Pierre, nativo de Haití, evoca en su libro ‘In My Haitian State of Mind: For the Love of Haiti’. El Sr. Pierre delinea los problemas de Haití: la tasa de analfabetismo es de 90%, el 85% vive bajo el nivel de pobreza, la expectativa de vida es de 55 años y la gente desconfía enormemente de los poderes gubernamentales debido a la rampante corrupción e injusticia. Más allá de creer que Haití continuará cómo está, Pierre nos ofrece una visión de lo que podría ser. Su nuevo Haití sería un país donde todo el pueblo se unifica por el amor al país y por el amor a sí mismos. Los ciudadanos junto con los poderes gubernamentales deberán trabajar juntos para educar a los jóvenes, proveer servicios de salud y empleo de calidad para todos y para asegurar los derechos de propiedad para que todos puedan vivir en armonía y respetando a los demás. Este sueño es hermoso y vale la pena. Sería lo deseable no sólo para Haití sino para todo el mundo, pero el libro de Jean E. Pierre adolece de, únicamente, presentar el sueño pero sin señalar los medios para hacerlo realidad. Tampoco explica cómo se llegó a la presente situación ni cuáles serían los medios adecuados para unificar a la gente. En el futuro que él contempla, todos los haitianos sueñan con lo mismo y, Haití se convierte en un país con esperanza y unos ideales compartidos por todos. Aunque se podría adoptar un punto de vista cínico fácilmente, siempre debemos recordar que idealistas como Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., o el mismo Martín Lutero consiguieron inspirar a sus paisanos.  Un aspecto desconcertante del libro es el torpe manejo del inglés escrito por parte del autor. Oraciones como “la corrupción no debe ser tolerar, pero lo esperado ha llegado a los políticos”, son más que abundantes y distraen al lector de los temas reales. MEMPHIS (LPL) — When Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake six months ago, the people of the world responded with an outpouring of money and supplies to repair the physical damage caused by the quake and to relieve the suffering of the Haitian people. There was also a deep desire to ameliorate the present and future lives of the Haitians, who were said to be living in the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  It is that hope of improving the future that Jean E. Pierre, a native Haitian, evokes in his book In My Haitian State of Mind: For the Love of Haiti.  Mr. Pierre outlines the problems in Haiti: 90% of the population is illiterate; 85% live well below poverty levels; life expectancy is only 55 years and the people have a great distrust of the governing powers due to the rampant corruption and injustice.  Rather than believe that Haiti will continue as it now is, Mr. Pierre gives us his vision of what Haiti could become. His new Haiti would be a country in which all the people are unified in their love of county and love of each other.  The citizens along with the governing powers would work together to educate the young, provide health care for all, provide meaning employment and secure property rights so that all would  live in respect and harmony with each other.  This dream is a beautiful and worthy vision.  Would be that it were possible and true not only in Haiti but in every country of the world, but Mr. Pierre’s book suffers in that he provides only the dream, not  the means to make the dream  real.  He does not explain why the present culture exists nor does he provide any clear means of unifying the people.  In the future he envisions all Haitians will dream the same dream and Haiti will be a country of shared faith and shared ideals. While it is easy to be cynical about such expectations, we must always remember that idealists such as Gandhi or Martin Luther King or Martin Luther himself were able to so inspire their countrymen.   One disturbing aspect of the book is the author’s awkwardness with written English usage.   Sentences such as this: “Corruption should not be tolerate, but expected it has come to politicians.”  are far too common, and distract the reader from the themes. Unfortunately such usage leads the reader to dismiss the author as uninformed or naive and thus diminishes his arguments and appeals.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — ArtsMemphis will launch its 2010-11 Bravo season at a free Kickoff event held from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, at the Center for Southern Folklore and Pembroke Square Arcade, 119 S. Main. Bravo is a fun, social way for Memphians aged 21-40 to experience the arts through unique monthly events.

At the free Kickoff, one can tour the Center for Southern Folklore and the Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art, listen to performances by Hypelife Arts and Opera Memphis, watch a fire performance by Nadia Sophia, dance to the soulful sounds of the Bluff City Backsliders, pose for a rock ‘n’ roll portrait in the photo booth with photographer Marcy Milman, enjoy food from The Majestic Grille and purchase discounted memberships for the 2010-11 Bravo season.
