MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — A missing person’s case involving a Memphis mother of five came to a shocking and disturbing end when investigators found Sony Millbrook’s body under the bed in a motel room that several people had rented before the body was discovered.

The following is the press release from the Memphis Police Department:

On January 27, 2010 Sony Millbrook was reported missing to the Memphis Police Department after she failed to pick-up her children from school. Officers responded to 3347 Adair after family members received a call from the school that Sony had not picked up the children from school. Family members arrived while officers were completing this report and advised officers that they checked the hotel where Sony Millbrook has been residing and she was not there. The family indicated no one was in the room. Sony had been staying at the Budget Lodge room 222 at 1533 East Brooks and was last seen there at 7:00 am by a staff member who advised officers the room had been locked out today for lack of payment but all of personal belongings were still inside the apartment. Officers contacted the Budget Lodge to verify this information via telephone.

The case was assigned to the Missing Persons Bureau for follow-up investigation, however due to the nature of the incident the case was reassigned to Homicide on February 3, 2010. A Homicide Investigator conducting a follow-up went to the Budget Lodge, 1533 E. Brooks Road on February 4, 2010 and spoke to two clerks and a security guard. The investigator learned that Ms Millbrook did not make a payment after January 26th and her belongs were boxed up and the room released for rental. The family had been there on the 27th and 28th and removed items from the room. The room had been rented three times since January 29th till February 4th.

Homicide Investigators located Ms Millbrook boyfriend, LaKeith Moody and interrogated him during the course of the investigation and later charged him with a gun violation and he is currently in Mason TN being held on a federal gun charge. Moody remains a person of interest in this case.

On March 15, 2010 Homicide Investigators were called to the Budget Lodge room 222 where the body of a female had been located under the bed, after a report of bad odor was reported in the room. The body was identified as Sony Millbrook and it is apparent that she was the victim of a homicide. The cause of death is not being released at this time. (The bed in which the victim was located is a metal box frame which sets directly on the floor and the box springs and mattress set inside the metal frame.) The room had been rented approximately 5 times and cleaned by the hotel staff numerous times since January 27th.

The investigation into the murder of Sony Millbrook is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers @ 528-CASH.

MEMPHIS (LPL) — The Memphis Cargo Theft Task Force (MCTTF) received information that a suspect had a stolen load of copper. Through a thorough investigation, detectives found that the load of copper was possibly valued at $120,000.00.

On Friday, March 12, 2010, MCTTF and SSTF, which is comprised of detectives from the Memphis Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Bartlett Police Department, Germantown Police Department and FBI, executed an operations plan in the investigation.

Mark Johnson, 28, and Michael May, 41, were arrested by uniformed deputies at I-40/Whitten.

Both suspects were charged with Theft of Property over $60,000.00. At the moment they sleep behind bars in the county jail on bail of $ 75,000 each one.

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — Memphis police have arrested and charged a suspect in the shooting death of Southland Mall security guard Marques Rainey.

Tuesday, police charged Terrell Loverson, 20, with First Degree Murder in connection with Rainey’s death.  Loverson was also charged with assault and resisting official detention.

Action News 5 was with Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin Monday night when he received word of the arrest. Godwin, Mayor A C Wharton, and Councilman Harold Collins were all at the mall to sit down with the mall manager to discuss crime prevention strategy.

Witnesses said the shooting happened while a group of men were in a fight near the mall’s north entrance Saturday afternoon. When Rainey tried to intervene, one of the men turned and shot him in the chest.

The 28-year-old husband, and step father was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Steps will be taken to make sure this continues to be a safe place,” Wharton said.

Wharton didn’t get specific about what those steps would be, but he made his commitment clear.

“We’re going to bring the full power of the city of Memphis and the state of Tennessee to deal with this….If I had my way it would be heinous crime to bring a firearm into crowded malls unless properly licensed.”

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin said when there is violence in the community, his department will address it.

“We’re going to sit down as the Mayor said and work out a plan,” Godwin said.

The first step of the plan seemed to be showing people the city cares.

Director Godwin said the area is safe. Like any mall, he said, there are problems with shoplifting, and car break-ins. Godwin could not say if the shooter, later identified as Loverson, was part of a gang.

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — La policía de Memphis ha detenido y acusado a un sospechoso en el asesinato a tiros del guardia de seguridad del Southland Mall, Marques Rainey.

El martes (Mar. 02), la policía acusó Terrell Loverson, de 20 años, de homicidio en primer grado en relación con la muerte de Rainey. Loverson también fue acusado de asalto y resistencia a la detención oficial.

Action News 5 estaba con el director de la Policía de Memphis, Larry Godwin, la noche del lunes cuando recibió la noticia de la detención. Godwin, el alcalde AC Wharton y el concejal Harold Collins estaban con el administrador del centro comercial para discutir  estrategias de prevención del delito.

Testigos dijeron que el tiroteo ocurrió mientras un grupo de hombres estaban en una pelea cerca de la entrada norte del centro comercial el sábado por la tarde (Feb. 27). Cuando Rainey trató de intervenir, uno de los hombres se volvió y le disparó en el pecho.

El marido y padrastro de 28 años de edad fue declarado muerto en el hospital.

“Vamos a poner todo el poder de la ciudad de Memphis y el estado de Tennessee para hacer frente a esto…. Si estuviera en mi mano convertiría en delito atroz el llevar un arma de fuego a centros comerciales a menos que la portase con la licencia adecuada.

Larry Godwin, director de la Policía de Memphis dijo que cuando hay violencia en la comunidad, su departamento se ocupará de ello.

“Vamos a sentarnos, como el alcalde dijo y elaboraremos un plan”, dijo Godwin.

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — Memphis police arrested a suspect Monday in the weekend stabbing of an officer.

Officer Justina Scoggins was on a routine patrol by herself at Dunnavant and Dow Place around 9:00 Sunday morning.  When she confronted a man in the abandoned apartments, he stabbed her in the arm and leg.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken into custody during a traffic stop early Monday afternoon.

Monday, Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin updated Scoggins’ condition.

“She’s doing very well,” Godwin said. “Her spirits are good. She’s recovering.”

Michael Branch, who lives nearby, saw the aftermath of the incident.

“The police officer rolled up and stopped over there, got out of the car and went over there to the back of the apartments,” Branch said.  “I guess she chased a guy to the back, and the next thing we know 50 police cars pull up.”

A Colonel with the Memphis Police Department said Scoggins was “roughed up pretty badly”, with abrasions to the face and body. She was taken to The MED and later discharged.

Branch said this incident is further proof the abandoned apartments need to be torn down.

“People go over there to do their dirty work,” Branch said.  “It needs to be knocked down.”

“If it ain’t safe for a police officer to be over there, you know kids ain’t got no business being over there,” said Harry Day, who also lives nearby.  “The best thing that could happen is they do something with them or tear them down.”

Peggy Williamson with the Midtown Security Community said they are on the lookout for the suspect.

“People really want to do something about crime,” Williamson said.  “I would say to people who are listening you can get involved as well … find out who your colonel is and let them know of your support.”

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — La policía de Memphis detuvo a un sospechoso el lunes en el caso del apuñalamiento de una oficial el fin de semana pasado.

La oficial Justina Scoggins estaba sola en un patrullaje de rutina en Dunnavant y Dow,  alrededor de las 9:00am del domingo. Cuando se enfrentó a un hombre en los apartamentos abandonados, éste la apuñaló en el brazo y la pierna.

El sospechoso, cuya identidad aún no ha sido puesto en dada a conocer, fue detenido cuando fue parado por una patrulla la tarde del lunes.

El mismo lunes el director de la Policía de Memphis, Larry Godwin, actualizaba la  condición de Scoggins.

“Está muy bien”, dijo Godwin. “Su ánimo es bueno. Se está recuperando”.

Michael Branch, que vive cerca, vio las secuelas del incidente.

“La oficial de policía llegó y se detuvo allí, se bajó de la patrulla y se fue de allí a la parte trasera de los apartamentos”, dijo Branch. “Supongo que perseguía a un hombre en la parte de atrás y, lo siguiente que supimos es que llegaron 50 coches de la policía.”

Frank Graham, charged with killing his ex-girlfriend

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) — Bond was denied Monday for a Memphis firefighter charged with killing his ex-girlfriend outside a hospital.

Frank Graham was charged Sunday with first degree murder in the death of Taffi Crawford, a nurse who worked at Delta Medical Center.

Flanked by two deputy jailers and three sheriff’s deputies, Graham was arraigned by a Memphis judge Monday morning.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Graham shot Crawford three times. Witnesses told investigators they heard one shot, a pause, and then two more shots.

One witness turned in time to see Graham, “pointing the gun at the ground firing two more shots.”

In a written statement, Graham admitted that he borrowed someone else’s car “to be inconspicuous.”  Carrying a handgun, Graham admitted that he went looking for Crawford, and shot her.

At the scene Friday, Crawford’s friends said she was vocal about previous problems in the relationship.

“I just heard a lot about it,” Roderick Hinton said. “I wasn’t sure about him, but she used to talk about it a lot, that he was abusive.”

Crawford was airlifted to the MED, where she died at 11:50 a.m., according to the affidavit.

The Shelby County Medical Examiner declared the cause of death “homicide.”

Graham is being held in jail without bond, and will be back in court March 3.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) — Se le negó fianza el lunes al bombero de Memphis acusado de matar a su ex-novia fuera del hospital.

MEMPHIS — A Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy was charged today for robbing a Memphis credit union last week.  Phtosa (correct spelling pronounced TOE-SAH) Dennis, 42, of Memphis, was arrested last Friday afternoon by officers with the F.B.I. Safe Streets Task Force.  The task force is comprised of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.), Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Memphis, Bartlett and Germantown Police Departments.

Task force Officers say Dennis walked into the First South Credit Union at 3731 Austin Peay Highway last Tuesday (February 2, 2010) and initially stood in line as a customer.

When Dennis stepped up to the counter, she handed the teller a note that demanded money.  However, the teller ran from the counter when she saw Dennis had a gun.

With no teller at the counter, Dennis grabbed the note and ran out of the business.  During the escape, she dropped her gun.  She recovered it and then sped away in a gold sedan.

Dennis is a Corrections Deputy at the men’s jail at 201 Poplar.  She hired on in 1997 and has been relieved of duty with pay while the investigation continues. 

Dennis faces charges of bank robbery and carrying a gun during the commission of a violent crime.  She is being held at the federal holding facility in Mason, Tennessee.  No bond has been set.

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — A man and a woman were shot and injured Tuesday morning during an apparent domestic dispute.

According to Memphis police, the shooting happened around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 09) in a home on Glenview Avenue.

Family members said the wounded woman and her child’s father were returning to the woman’s home after taking their baby to the doctor when the shooting occurred.

Witnesses said the baby’s father became upset because the woman’s new boyfriend was at the home when they arrived.  A short time later, the shooting started.

“He got angry and started shooting,” said the woman’s uncle, Charles Lewis. “He shot my niece and he shot my other man. And there were kids in the house. He said he wanted to kill the baby now.”

The woman was taken to The MED with a wound to her back.  Her new boyfriend was also injured.  Both were listed in non critical condition.

Police are still searching for the suspect in the shooting.

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) — Un hombre y una mujer fueron heridos de bala este martes por la mañana aparentemente durante una disputa doméstica.

Según la policía de Memphis, el tiroteo ocurrió alrededor de las 8:00am del martes (Feb. 09) en una casa en Glenview Avenue.

Miembros de la familia dijeron que la mujer herida y el padre de su hijo regresaban a casa de la mujer después de llevar al bebé al médico cuando ocurrió el tiroteo.

Testigos dijeron que el padre del bebé se molestó porque el nuevo novio de la mujer estaba en la casa cuando llegaron. Poco tiempo después, empezó el tiroteo.

“Él se enojó y comenzó a disparar”, dijo el tío de la mujer, Charles Lewis. “Él baleó a mi sobrina y le disparó al otro hombre. Y había niños en la casa. Decía que quería matar al bebé enseguida”.

La mujer fue llevada al MED, con una herida en la espalda. Su nuevo novio también resultó herido. Ambos estaban en condición no crítica.

La policía todavía está buscando al sospechoso en el tiroteo.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) — Many parents at Ford Road Elementary School Friday did not even know about the charges against one of the faculty members there.

But 2nd grade teacher Timothy Sanders may never be back after Memphis Police said they caught him in a sexual situation with a 17 year-old boy.

“They’re held to a higher standard,” said parent Libra Pree.  “Because they supposed to be educating our children, not messing with them,” she added.

Police said officers on routine patrol around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning decided to look in the window of Sanders’ car when they saw it parked in a lot at Greenbelt Park on Mud Island.

Court records stated that both Sanders and the boy were “partially unclothed” and preparing to have sex.

“You could say yes,” said Major Loris Hopkins with Memphis Police.

Hopkins said Sanders exposed his privates and even wore a condom during the encounter.  However, he was caught just before having sex with the victim who is one year below the age of consent.

“His parents were contacted and they cooperated with the investigation,” said Hopkins.  “They wanted to press charges,” she added.

Police said Sanders met the victim on MySpace and initially agreed to be just friends.

“It is disturbing that he’s a teacher,” said Major Hopkins.  “Especially when his everyday activity is around minor children,” she added.

The school district took Sanders off the job without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) — Este viernes, muchos padres de la Escuela Primaria Ford Road no sabían nada de los cargos en contra de uno de los miembros de la plantilla académica de esta escuela.

La policía dijo que Sanders encontró a la víctima en My Space e inicialmente acordaron hacerse sólo amigos.
