1 dead, 5 injured in New York parking garage collapse

New York, Apr 18 (EFE).- One person died and five others were injured when a four-story parking garage in the Lower Manhattan Financial District collapsed for as yet unknown reasons, New York City’s fire department reported Tuesday.

The parking garage, built in 1957, was located on Ann Street, quite near buildings belonging to PACE university, a private institution.

Part of the structure collapsed about 4 pm and a number of vehicles became piled on top of one another, as video images recorded by onlookers showed.

New York Fire Department operations chief John Esposito said that his personnel found six people inside the structure, one of whom was dead. The five other people were reported to be injured but in “stable” condition.

Firefighters taking part in initial rescue operations were ordered to leave the structure due to fears that more of the unstable parking garage might collapse, but they continued to search the premises and ruins with robotic dogs and drones, accounting – they reportedly believe – for everyone who was at the site when the collapse occurred.

The parking garage was used by Sheriff’s Department personnel, but none of them was injured in the incident, according to initial reports.
