Prince Hamzah promises to abide by its rules, says Jordan’s royal court

Amman, Apr 5 (efe-epa).- Jordan’s former Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, who stands accused of undermining the country’s stability, has vowed to comply with the guidelines of the ruling Hashemite family, the Royal Court announced on Monday.

Prince Hamzah denounced that he was placed under house arrest on Saturday as between 16 and 18 people were arrested including a royal family member and a former advisor to the king, over conspiracy allegations, which the king’s half-brother denied.

The government accused Hamzah and other detainees of engaging in “contact with external parties about the most appropriate time to start acting to destabilize the security of our glorious Jordan.”

“In light of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s decision to deal with the issue of His Highness Prince Hamzah within the framework of the Hashemite family, His Majesty entrusted this path to his uncle, His Highness Prince El Hassan,” the royal house posted to its Twitter account.

El Hassan “communicated with Prince Hamzah, and Prince Hamzah confirmed that he adheres to the approach of the Hashemite family, and the path that His Majesty the King entrusted to Prince El Hassan,” it added.

Earlier in the day, army Chief of Staff Yusef al-Huneiti said, during special forces’ maneuvers, that the military is prepared to face “any attempt to undermine the security of the state and destabilize the kingdom.”

“Besides facing all kinds of threats on the borders” of Jordan the army will face any internal threat,” he was cited by the state-run Petra news agency as saying.

He underlined the army’s commitment to its “duty before the nation and the Hashemite leadership” of King Abdullah II.

Prince Hamzah is the eldest son of King Hussein and Queen Noor, whom the monarch married in 1978 after having been divorced twice and widowed once.

When Hussein died in February 1999, Hamzah was named crown prince, but that decision was revoked in November 2004, when he was replaced in that role by Hussein bin Abdullah.
