Simone Biles pulls out of floor exercise final

Tokyo, Aug 1 (EFE).- The American gymnast Simone Biles has ruled out participating at the floor exercise finals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the USA Gymnastics said Sunday.

The celebrated gymnast has been battling mental health problems that have already prevented her from competing in four finals at the ongoing quadrennial event in Japan.

The regulatory body for gymnastics in the United States said Biles would decide “later” about her participation in Tuesday’s beam event.

“Either way, we’re all behind you, Simone,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement posted on Twitter.

On Jul.25, Biles participated in the qualifying round, and – despite obtaining the highest score – was seen to be nervous and made more mistakes than usual.

Two days later, in the team final, she retired after just a single vault.

She later spoke of the pressure she faced and to an episode of ‘twisties’, incidents of disorientation between the mind and the body.

She has not competed since then, but has been seen everyday at the Ariake gym cheering on her teammates. EFE
