Sydney surpasses average annual rainfall in April

Sydney, Australia, Apr 7 (EFE).- Sydney on Thursday surpassed its annual average rainfall just a few months into the year.

From Jan. 1 to Apr. 7, Australia’s largest city with 5.3 million residents, accumulated more than 1,226.8 millimeters of rain, above the annual average of 1,213.4 mm, according to data from the Sydney Observatory Hill weather station in The Rocks.

The data was recorded after a deluge overnight Wednesday to Thursday, with 114 mm falling in the area.

The city was experiencing a new storm Thursday that saw rivers overflow, roads flood, and trees fall down, prompting several evacuation orders in surrounding towns and neighborhoods in southern Sydney.

Between February and March, Sydney and other cities on the east coast of Australia, such as the town of Lismore, suffered severe flooding that cost the lives of more than 20 people and forced the temporary evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents, in addition to causing extensive material damage.

In early March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned in a report that Australia will face major impacts and irreversible changes to its natural systems from the climate crisis.

Experts have warned for years that Australia will increasingly suffer from extreme heat and bushfires as a result of climate change, as well as rising water levels, risks of flooding and ocean acidification. EFE
