17 killed in Bangladesh bus collision

Dhaka, Mar 26 (efe-epa).- At least 17 people were killed and two others wounded after a passenger bus collided with a microbus in Bangladesh on Friday, a police officer said.

The deadly head-on collision between the two vehicles took place in the northern Rajshahi city, police officer Ekramul Haque said.

At least 11 passengers died on the spot.

“We pulled out 11 bodies from the microbus. Eight passengers of the bus were taken to a hospital and six of them died,” Haque said.

He said the microbus caught fire after it was hit by the bus.

“Everything happened within seconds. The microbus caught fire, possibly, due to an explosion in its gas cylinder,” he said.

Accidents are common in Bangladesh as road communications are rough in the heavily populated and poverty-stricken South Asian country.

Nearly 4,000 people lost their lives and more than 3,800 suffered wounds in some 4,200 road accidents in the country in 2020, according to police. EFE-EPA
