Woman Says Her Son Was Inmate Who Died After Being Stabbed at 201 Poplar

MEMPHIS, TN (FOX 13) — A woman told FOX13 that her son was the inmate who died after being stabbed at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center Thursday morning.
LaQuita Byrd called the FOX13 newsroom shortly after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) confirmed that an inmate was stabbed at 201 Poplar and was pronounced dead after arriving at Regional One Health.
LaQuita Byrd said that she was informed that her son, 25-year-old Deion Byrd, died in the stabbing when her son’s attorney called her.
She told FOX13 that, hours after the stabbing, she still had not heard from the sheriff’s office and, as of 3:30 p.m., she was on her way to 201 Poplar to try and get answers about her son’s death.
FOX13 was at 201 Poplar Thursday morning when commotion broke out behind a closed door of a courtroom, leading the court to be cleared.
While LaQuita Byrd waited on confirmation from SCSO, FOX13 looked for information about her son in court records.
The court database of SCSO showed that Deion Byrd was scheduled to appear in that courtroom on Thursday. But, as of 3:30 p.m., no booking information was available on the Shelby County Sheriff’s website for Deion Byrd.
