Fire devastates 100 homes in Santos, Brazil

Sao Paulo, Brazil, 5 sep (EFE).-A large fire destroyed more than 100 wooden shacks in the Brazilian city of Santos, fire officials said Tuesday.

It is not yet known what cause the fire or if there were any fatalities. Authorities said that at least 15 people suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to hospitals in the region.

The fire began around 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Rádio Clube neighborhood, north of Santos, on the coast of Sao Paulo state.

A team of 43 firefighters with the help of 15 company vehicles managed to contain the flames four hours later.

According to a statement from the fire department, the wind quickly spread the flames in the area, making containment difficult.

The mayor’s office said authorities were working to determine the exact number of people who lost their homes, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The displaced families are being taken care of in a temporary shelter in a sports center. According to the town hall, a donation plan for the affected families is also being organized. Items such as clothing, water and hygiene products have been requested. EFE
