2 killed as Russia strikes Kyiv again in wake of deadly drone attacks

(Update 1: Adds latest death toll, details)

Lviv, Ukraine, Oct 18 (EFE).- At least two people were killed in fresh Russian missile strikes which targeted critical energy supply stations in Kyiv on Tuesday, local authorities said.

Another person was injured in the aerial strikes on the capital’s northeastern Desnyanskyi district, the city’s prosecutor’s office said in a statement cited by the Kyiv Independent.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed Russia had destroyed 30% of Ukraine’s power stations since launching a wave of attacks on October 10 and had caused “massive blackouts across the country.”

“No space left for negotiations with Putin regime,” he added.

Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko said the Russian strikes on Tuesday hit “critical infrastructure,” causing electricity and water shortages in some parts of the city.

The latest aerial attacks come a day after Russia launched a series of drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital, killing at least five people, said Klitschko, raising the death toll Tuesday by one.

“From under the rubble of a building in the center of the capital, which was hit by a Russian kamikaze drone yesterday morning, the body of another deceased resident – an elderly woman – was recovered,” he tweeted.

Online news portal Ukrainskaya Pravda on Tuesday reported Russian missile fire on Tuesday also hit the Ukrainian cities Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Zhytomyr.

Zhytomyr mayor Sergiy Sukhomlyn said on social media that the electricity and water supplies were affected.

The wave of Russian attacks against Ukraine’s energy hubs ahead of winter has prompted Ukrainian authorities to take measures to stabilize the electricity network, including a suspension of exports to the European Union. EFE
