SHELBY COUNTY, TN (LPL/WMC) — Apenas unos días antes de la votación anticipada, hubo una batalla de ocho horas sobre los lugares de votación después de reclamos de discriminación cuando se trata de ubicaciones específicas.

The lawsuit is the NAACP against the Shelby County Election Commission.

With just one week before early voting is set to begin, officials held an emergency junction hearing to change where early voters can cast their ballot.

Monday night, the judge ruled that all sites would open Monday, July 16. Two additional sites – Mississippi Boulevard and Ed Rice or Dave Wells Community Center – will open Friday, July 13.

Shelby County Election Commission Chairman Robert Meyers testified for nearly three hours about how the commission came to the decision to open three early voting sites four days before the other early voting sites.

Meyers said after public outcry to only open the Agricenter, the commission voted to open one early voting site that heavily attracts Republican voters at New Bethel Baptist Church in Germantown.

They’re also opening a second site that heavily attracts Democrat voters at Abundant Grace and the Shelby County Election Commission building on Nixon, which is required by law.

The plaintiffs want all of the early voting sites to be open on the same day just as they did in the May primary.

But the election commission said it’s too late, and they are not prepared. They don’t have enough staff trained to open all sites, nor do they know if all the early voting sites can open four days early.

“It is our position that everybody that needs to vote, needs to have every site open every day,” said one official. “If the Election Commission wants to maintain that’s impossible, early voting starts Friday, it’s a creature of their own creation.”

The judge ruled while it is a great burden to the Shelby County Election Commission to make these changes in just four days, it is not enough of a burden to potentially disenfranchise a large segment of voters particularly African-Americans.
