MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — The beginning of 2019 also marks the start of bicentennial celebrations in Memphis, “The Home of the Blues.” For this reason, at La Prensa Latina, we wanted to make this special report to highlight the most important aspects of the city, including its evolution (in photos).

From Graceland, Sun Studio, the National Civil Rights Museum, Shelby Farms Park and Beale Street, to the Orpheum Theatre, the Playhouse on the Square, the Memphis Zoo, the Pink Palace, the Levitt Shell, The Peabody Hotel, and FedEx, just to mention some of the most iconic landmarks of the area, Memphis has grown into a major metropolitan area and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States of America.

Because of its strategic geographical location, and because it is the headquarters of FedEx and other major transportation companies, Memphis is one of the largest distribution centers in the country. The Memphis International Airport is the world’s second busiest cargo airport (after Hong Kong). The city also hosts one of the largest inland river ports in the U.S. with numerous connections from its Mississippi River hub. Moreover, its extensive rail and highway facilities only add to Memphis’ key role in the logistics and transport industries.

Memphis is also a major world cotton market and a world leader in hardwood trading and processing and soybean processing. The city serves an agricultural area noted for cattle, cotton, soybeans, corn, feed grains, and forest products, and has agricultural research and food processing industries. Likewise, it is an important wholesale center. Manufactures include electronics, medical products and equipment, and paper products. Services (including health care, banking and finance, government, and education), tourism and convention business, and high-technology industries also contribute to the economy.

In addition, the city is distinguished by its rich cultural diversity and wonderful cuisine: rumor has it that Memphis has the best BBQ in the world.

For all this and more is that both city and county leaders, as well as large organizations, have prepared a series of events to celebrate the 200 years of Memphis:

¤ Memphis in May broke the tradition as it will be honoring Memphis this year at its famous International Festival during the month of May, which includes the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Great American River Run, and 901 Fest.

¤ The Pink Palace Family of Museums will have a special exhibit in March, titled “Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community,” bringing together stories of the past and present and their influence on the future to illustrate the interconnected web of Memphis history. With the usage of technology, interactive components, art, and design, this exhibit is a multimedia, multisensory experience, that will encourage visitors to experience Memphis’ history in new ways.

¤ The Memphis Public Library Network will also have a series of educational programs throughout the year, starting with the first one that will take place on January 26, from 1 PM to 2 PM, at Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (Memphis Room – 4th floor). They will be showing a collection of photographs, drawings and historical maps of the early years of Memphis.

¤ The City of Memphis and Shelby County will be celebrating the city’s past, looking to the future as well. The official slogan of the city, which marks the anniversary, is “A New Century of Soul.”

¤ The Greater Memphis Chamber, meanwhile, plans to focus more on helping with the growth of small local businesses. In addition, it will be celebrating the development of the city’s economy. “In many ways while we’re celebrating 200 years, we’re looking to the future because that is a new renaissance for Memphis,” said Beverly Robertson, interim President and CEO of the Greater Memphis.

¤ There is also a website, called “Mem200” (https://mem200.com/), that is strictly dedicated to announcing the events that will be held to celebrate the bicentennial of Memphis.

Memphis was founded in 1819, on lands that were previously inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians. Andrew Jackson, who later became president of the United States, was one of its founders. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto visited the area in 1541.
