Berlin police continue search for lioness

Berlin, Jul 21 (EFE).- Police in Berlin on Friday were still searching for a suspected lioness that has been on the loose for over 36 hours.

Mobile police hone footage of the “big cat” roaming the streets of a southern suburb emerged on Thursday, police said in a statement.

Initial calls of sightings of the suspected lioness came in at around midnight on Wednesday.

Police spokeswoman, Beate Ostertag, told local media on Friday that the search will continue “until the animal is found.”

Reinforcements for the search for the “free-roaming feline predator” were deployed southwest of the capital with drones, helicopters and thermal imaging cameras, according to civil protection services.

Local media reported that a small armored off-road vehicle of the special task force (SEK) had also been deployed in the search.

“It can’t go on like this for days,” Michael Grubert, the mayor of Kleinmachnow, a town just outside the capital, said.

No lions have been reported missing from zoos, animal parks, or circuses around Berlin.

Brandenburg police urged the local population not to leave their homes, while the Berlin fire department said pets should not be allowed outdoors for the duration of the alert.

The alert straddles several districts in southwest Berlin as well as neighboring Potsdam.EFE
