MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — This past weekend, the Memphis Police Department and Iglesia Atalayas de Jesús held a community event where they hoped to build a closer relationship with the Hispanic community.

Although the attendance of Hispanics was low, the organizers were satisfied as this first step was taken firmly.

MPD’s Hispanic Liaison Officer, Alfonso Perea, was directing the event, which not only consisted of various tips related to protecting yourself from crime, but also included questions about local cases of crime against Hispanics.

The event was also attended by Don Crowe, the Assistant Chief of Police Services, as well as some Hispanic police officers.

One of the main topics discussed at the meeting was building links between neighbors to form the so-called “Neighborhood Watch” or Neighborhood Watch groups, which operate throughout the city and are a very useful tool when monitoring and reporting a crime.

Some of the attendees also asked about specific cases in which there was no satisfaction with the response of law enforcement.

Many of the criminals are minors, who are released after being arrested due to the new bail system; this is what frustrates not only the community, but also the police officers.

According to the organizers, this is the first of many events to further involve the Latino community in solving the crime problem in our city.
