At least two dead after Cessna crashes into Cancún lagoon

Cancún, Mexico, Mar 30 (efe-epa).- At least two people were killed in a plane crash on Tuesday in Nichupte Lagoon, near a commercial and residential complex in the tourist hotel zone of Cancún, in the Mexican Caribbean.

Emergency and civil protection services of the southeastern state of Quintana Roo responded to a call for help around 4 pm local time (21:00 GMT).

Personnel from various emergency services supported the rescue of the passengers, although one died while the rescue maneuvers were being carried out, Francisco Fernández Millán, president of the Nautical Association of Quintana Roo, said in a statement.

Later, emergency services reported that a second person was rescued alive but died on the ground while receiving first aid from paramedics.

The plane was a Cessna 206 with registration XA-UPC, according to information provided by the authorities.

The Cessna took off from Holbox and upon reaching the tourist hotel zone, and while preparing for landing, it nosedived into the lagoon.

The plane belongs to an aviation company, and local press reported that it was an air taxi with four people on board.

In the hotel zone, members of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, Ministerial Police, Public Security, firefighters and paramedics were active, as well as volunteers on jet skis supporting rescue efforts. EFE-EPA
