Russia hits another record for daily coronavirus-induced deaths

Moscow, Aug 12 (EFE).- Russia set a new pandemic record on Thursday, as it registered 808 deaths linked to Covid-19.

That puts the country’s total number of coronavirus deaths at 168,049, with more than 6.5 million people infected by the virus, according to official figures.

The previous highest daily toll was logged on Wednesday, with 779 deaths.

Most of the fatalities were located in Moscow (56) and Saint Petersburg (48).

Out of 21,932 infections reported in the past 24 hours, some 2,294 were registered in Moscow, and 1,801 others in Saint Petersburg.

More than 39 million people in Russia have received at least a first jab of the Covid-19 vaccine, while some 28 million others have been fully vaccinated, according to authorities.

Russia, the world’s fifth most affected country by the pandemic after the US, India, Brazil and France, is aiming to get 80% of the population vaccinated by November, according to deputy prime minister Tatiana Golikova.EFE
