Newcastle dent Liverpool CL hopes with late 1-1 draw

Sports Desk, Apr 24 (EFE).- Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions were dealt a blow on Saturday as Newcastle capitalized on the Reds’ wasteful finishing to secure a 1-1 draw at Anfield and give their survival hopes a much-needed boost.

It first appeared that Callum Wilson had bundled the ball over the line to level the score in stoppage time, before the VAR stepped in to rule the goal out as the ball had struck the striker’s arm in the buildup.

Liverpool’s relief was only temporary, as seconds later Arsenal loanee Joe Willock’s deflected shot punished the home team’s awful defending.

They had started so brightly, with Mohamed Salah brilliantly putting his team ahead in the third minute, making history in the process as he became the first Liverpool player to score at least 20 Premier League goals in three consecutive seasons.

The Reds were dominant, especially in the first half, creating several clear goal scoring chances, but they were unable to capitalize on any of them and often looked vulnerable to Newcastle’s counter attacks.

“Very tough to take but there is nobody else to blame but ourselves. When you create chances like we created today and you don’t use them then you keep the game open,” Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said afterwards.

The draw leaves Liverpool in sixth with 54 points, just one behind fourth-placed Chelsea who take on West Ham United later on Saturday. Newcastle are in 15th spot with 36 points, eight points clear of the relegation zone. EFE
