Mahomes leads Chiefs to Super Bowl win over 49ers

Las Vegas, US, Feb 11 (EFE).- Patrick Mahomes scripted a late comeback to hand Kansas City Chiefs their third NFL championship in five seasons with a thrilling 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The victory in Super Bowl LVIII makes Kansas City the first team to win back-to-back Lombardi Trophies since the New England Patriots in 2003–2004, cementing the franchise’s right to be regarded as the NFL’s newest giants.

The quarterback brought out his best at a time when it mattered most for his team after Harrison Butker’s field goal sent the game to overtime at Allegiant Stadium, studded with celebrities.

Mahomes threw Mecole Hardman a 3-yard touchdown pass in overtime to vault the Chiefs past the San Francisco 49ers, completing their comeback.

The Texas-born star continues to forge a legendary career, leading the Chiefs to comeback from 10 or more points down 17 times, and at just 28, he has won three Super Bowls in his career to place his name in NFL history.

Mahomes finished his game 34 of 46 for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

He also led the Chiefs in rushing with 66 yards on nine runs, including three massive conversions with his legs in the last two minutes of regulation and overtime.

His third Super Bowl MVP Award tied Mahomes with Montana for the second-most all-time behind Tom Brady’s five.

He also became only the third back-to-back Super Bowl MVP, joining the legendary Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw.

He was nearly shut down in the first half by the 49ers’ ferocious defense as the Chiefs trailed 0-10 at one stage before the quarterback fashioned their comeback and ended up having the last word.

“Yeah, I just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs,” Mahomes said after the game on CBS broadcast. “Just know that.”

“I am going to try and stop getting down 10 points in these and make it easier,” Mahomes said jokingly, referring to his side’s trailing of 10 points in all his three Super Bowl wins.

For the 49ers, it was another tough defeat, having failed to win a Super Bowl since 1995 and falling to the Chiefs for the second time in four years.

Brock Purdy completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and gave a touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings. Jennings also threw the other TD pass of the night for the 49ers.

The other TD for the 49ers was scored by Christian McCaffrey, the offensive player of the year, who had 80 yards on 22 rushes and eight receptions for 80 yards. EFE
