5 dead, over 10 injured as van collides with train in Hungary

Budapest, Apr 5 (EFE).- At least five people died and more than 10 were injured – two of them seriously – when a van collided with a train in the southern Hungarian town of Mindszent, police said Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 7am local time at a railway crossing south of Mindszent when the vehicle carrying workers collided with a commuter train, which derailed, causing the deaths of five people.

Passengers from both vehicles were among the more than 10 injured, police said.

According to the official MTI news agency, citing sources from the MAV train company, seven people were in the van and the train was carrying 22 passengers.

The injured, including two in serious condition, were hospitalized or treated at the scene of the accident, the causes of which were being investigated by the authorities.

According to MAV, the traffic lights at the crossing were working and the van ran the red signal.

The affected railway line is expected to remain closed until Wednesday. EFE
