Over 5,000 civilian fatalities in Ukraine war, says UN

Geneva, Jul 12 (EFE).- At least 5,000 civilians have been killed since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, data from the United Nations Office for Human Rights showed on Tuesday.

A total of 5,042 people have been reported killed, including 343 minors, while another 11,544 were injured, including 357 children, the international organization said in a statement.

The actual number of civilian casualties is feared to be much higher, as the UN has no access to areas of heavy fighting, including Mariupol, Izium and Severodonetsk, according to the statement.

Over half of the civilian fatalities were registered in March.

Most of these civilian victims died from explosive devices with a wide impact area, including aerial bombardment, heavy artillery, missile and multi-launch rocket systems, the United Nations office said. EFE
