DNA confirms body parts belong to murdered Hong Kong model
Hong Kong, Mar 6 (EFE).- Hong Kong authorities Monday confirmed that DNA samples have confirmed that dismembered body parts discovered last month belonged to popular model Abby Choi Tin-Fung, whose brutal murder has shocked the former British colony.
Police found a skull, several ribs, and hair strands hidden in a steel soup pot and two legs from a rental house in Lung Mei Village on Feb. 24.
More body parts, including her torso and hands, are yet to be recovered.
DNA testing has confirmed that the body parts found at the village house last month belonged to the slain Hong Kong model, the South China Morning Post reported.
A Hong Kong court last Monday put Abby Choi’s ex-husband and in-laws in pretrial detention in connection with the gruesome murder.
Her ex-husband Alex Kwong, 28, his brother Anthony Kwong, 31, and his father, Kwong Kau, 65, were arrested and charged with murder.
A yacht company worker who allegedly tried to help Abby’s ex-husband escape from Hong Kong to Macao in exchange for HK$300,000 ($38,200) has also been arrested.
Prosecutor Brian Lai Tak-ki has sought a 10-week adjournment to continue the investigation, including forensic examinations of evidence seized from the village house where the remains were found.
Choi was reported missing on Feb.21.
A forensic team later found the legs of a woman in the refrigerator of a house on the outskirts of Hong Kong. It followed the discovery of a skull, several ribs, and hair immersed in a large pot with broth and vegetables.
Choi’s former father-in-law had recently rented the house. He is the alleged mastermind of the plot to assassinate her over a property dispute valued at millions of dollars.
A meat slicer, an electric saw, and some clothing allegedly related to the case also appeared at the scene.
Choi, who had almost 100,000 followers on Instagram, had become an internationally-known model after she attended Elie Saab’s spring-summer 2023 haute couture show in Paris.
She appeared on the digital cover of the luxury magazine ‘ L’Officiel Monaco’.
The model had a net worth of about 100 million Hong Kong dollars ($12.7 million) and came from a wealthy family with businesses in China.
The authorities indicated that the two children that Choi had with her ex-husband would remain in the custody of the model’s mother. EFE
