MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — This year, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will be held on Sunday, October 20, at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Tiger Lane, located at 335 S. Hollywood Street. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. for the registration process, and the 5K noncompetitive walk is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, with more than 1 million passionate participants supporting the noncompetitive three- to five-mile walks each year, according to ACS. This initiative was created in 1993 to raise awareness and generate funds to help eliminate the disease. Since then, more than $935 million has been raised across the country to help the organization end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Last year, for instance, ACS raised more than $500,000 in Memphis thanks to the support of the people who registered for the walk.

Also in 2018, the American Cancer Society helped guide more than 34,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey after being diagnosed.

“Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said Elizabeth Ennis, Community Development Manager at the American Cancer Society in Memphis. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. From research to education, prevention to diagnosis and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.”

It should be noted that October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” and that this terrible disease is the second leading cause of death among women. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that in 2019 there will be about 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women and about 2,670 cases diagnosed in men; and this is only in the United States. Similarly, it is estimated that 41,760 women and 500 men will die from breast cancer this year.

For this reason, it is recommended that the best way to detect breast cancer in its early stages is through a mammogram, especially between the ages of 50 and 74. A breast self-exam, done regularly, also helps to detect breast cancer.

Regarding the walk, which is free to attend, participants are encouraged to support the American Cancer Society by raising funds as an individual or team. All proceeds from the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will allow the American Cancer Society to fund revolutionary research on breast cancer; provide free education and support to people affected by the disease; and help other people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or to detect it early when it is most treatable.
