Brown bear cub rescued in northern Spain thriving in recovery center

Santander, June 26 (EFE).- A bear cub that was rescued in May in northern Spain was transferred to a wildlife recovery center after its wounds had healed considerably, the environment ministry reported on Sunday.

The cub was found in May by a resident of Igüeña, in Castille and Leon, with symptoms of dehydration and a generally poor condition. The bear was transferred to the Valladolid wild animal recovery center.

It arrived at that center in poor shape but after weeks of treatment, the cub started standing on his back limbs and was able to maintain its balance for short periods until it finally managed to walk, run and climb again.

The cub has gone from weighing just 3.8 to 8.9 kilograms.

Following the first phase of recovery, the bear cub has been transferred to Cantabria to undergo a recovery treatment with the hope it will eventually be released into the wild again.

Experts expect the cub to remain at the center for around two months until the bear is around 8 months old.

This is the fifth bear cub to be treated at the Villaescusa facilities in Valladolid after four other mammals were successfully treated at the sight. EFE
