77 inmates test positive for coronavirus in Spanish prison outbreak

Picassent (Spain), Jul 29 (EFE).- Prison authorities in Picassent, in the Spanish region of Valencia, confirmed on Thursday a total of 77 coronavirus cases in the Picassent prison following two Covid-19 outbreaks.

The first outbreak occurred last week, with 14 confirmed positive cases, while the second this week, with another 63 cases.

Prison authorities told Efe 123 inmates from the same prison module are currently in quarantine pending their Covid-19 test results.

All inmates have been vaccinated with the Johnson&Johnson vaccine and all cases have mild symptoms, according to prison sources.

Authorities said that in addition to all the positive cases, over 400 inmates across 13 prison modules are in quarantine.

Despite efforts, prison officials have not been able to locate the origin of the outbreaks and claim the penitentiary center was opened to the public too fast instead of adopting a progressive reopening in line with vaccination rates. EFE
