North Koreans travel to Russia ‘for freedom of nations’ forum

Seoul, Feb 13 (EFE).- A delegation from North Korea’s ruling party is traveling to Russia to attend an international forum, the state-run news agency reported on Tuesday, as the two countries deepen bilateral ties.

Kim Su-Gil and other members of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party left on Monday at the invitation of the ruling United Russia party to attend the so-called “For the Freedom of Nations” forum, Korea Central News Agency reported without more details.

The forum will take place on February 15–17 to forge multilateral cooperation for “the fight against modern practices of neo-colonialism,” according to the website of United Russia.

North Korea and Russia have significantly expanded their cooperation across various domains, intensifying their diplomatic engagements and exchanges following the summit between Kim Jong-un and President Vladimir Putin in September last year in Russia.

There are suspicions that Pyongyang may have supplied Moscow with artillery and ammunition, which were potentially used in the invasion of Ukraine.

This exchange is believed to involve a transfer of technology and weapons knowledge from Russia to North Korea, aimed at enhancing the latter’s arsenal.

Recently, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui visited Russia, reciprocating the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Pyongyang last year.

North Korea’s state-run media have been keen to highlight the growing frequency of exchanges with Russia.

This includes the recent trip by a group of Russian tourists, marking the first such visit since North Korea partially opened its borders following years of strict closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had isolated the country for an extended period. EFE
