2019 Hispanic Film Festival in Memphis

El Festival de Cine Hispano, organizado por el Departamento de Idiomas y Literaturas del Mundo y el Club de Español de la Universidad de Memphis, con el propósito de celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, cumple 10 años. En esta oportunidad, el ciclo -gratuito y abierto a la comunidad- ofrece lo más reciente de la cinematografía en español, con la presentación de cinco largometrajes producidos en Cuba, Colombia, España, Chile y Costa Rica.
Las películas -en español con subtítulos en inglés- se proyectarán entre fines de septiembre y principios de octubre en el University Center Theatre (499 University), a las 6:30 p.m. El festival parte el miércoles, 25 de septiembre, con la exhibición de Un traductor (2018), un interesante drama histórico -situado a fines de la década de los ochenta, en Cuba- de los hermanos Sebastián y Rodrigo Barriuso. En seguida, el ciclo continúa el viernes, 27 de septiembre, con la notable producción colombiana Pájaros de verano (2018), codirigida por Cristina Gallego y Ciro Guerra.
A continuación, el lunes, 30 de septiembre, se presenta el largometraje de suspenso Todos lo saben (2018), dirigido en España por el premiado director iraní Asghar Farhadi; y el martes, 1 de octubre, se exhibe Niñas araña (2017), un drama criminal del director chileno Guillermo Helo. El festival termina el miércoles, 9 de octubre, con El regreso (2011), trabajo escrito, dirigido y protagonizado por el realizador costarricense Hernán Jiménez.
El Festival de Cine Hispano 2019 cuenta con el patrocinio del fondo Student Events Allocation Fund (SEA), de la Universidad de Memphis; la distribuidora Pragda, Spain Arts & Culture y la Secretaría de Estado de Cultura de España. El evento, orientado a un público con criterio formado, reúne una selección de filmes premiados en reconocidos festivales internacionales.
Para llegar al teatro, una opción de estacionamiento se encuentra en la calle Walker o en el garaje de pago, ubicado en el 505 Zach H Curlin Street que se conecta directamente con el edificio University Center. The Hispanic Film Festival, organized by the Department of World Languages and Literatures and the Spanish Club at the University of Memphis during the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, is celebrating 10 years. The film series – free and open to the community – brings five movies coming from Cuba, Colombia, Spain, Chile, and Costa Rica.
The films – in Spanish with English subtitles – will be screened by the end of September and in early October at the University Center Theatre (499 University), at 6:30 p.m. The festival begins on September 25 with the Cuban historical drama, Un traductor (2018), by sibling Directors Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso. Next, the film series will present on September 27 the astonishing Birds of Passage (2018), a Colombian production that was codirected by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra.
The following Monday, September 30, is the turn for the thriller Everybody Knows (2018), filmed in Spain by renowned Iranian Director Asghar Farhadi; and on Tuesday, October 1, the festival is showing Spider Thieves, a Chilean drama directed by Guillermo Helo. The film series will end on Wednesday, October 9, with The Return (2011), a Costa-Rican movie written, directed and starred by Hernán Jiménez.
The 2019 Hispanic Film Festival is possible with the support of the Student Events Allocation Fund (SEA), at The University of Memphis, along with that of Pragda Film Distributor, Spain Arts & Culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain. This event, intended for mature audiences, brings a fine selection of films awarded in international film festivals.
