Armenian prime minister’s party wins snap elections

Yerevan, Jun 21 (EFE).- Armenia’s acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party won the recent parliamentary elections with 53.92 percent of the votes, according to the preliminary results of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Monday.

However, his main rival, former President Robert Kocharyan, who leads the opposition coalition has refused to accept the result of Sunday’s elections.

Kocharyan’s electoral alliance, Armenia, secured 21.04 percent of the votes, according to the CEC.

Pashinyan wrote in a Facebook post that his party will have constitutional majority in the new parliament and form the government.

According to pre-poll surveys, the conservatives led by Kocharyan were projected to win comfortably, especially with the people’s disillusionment over the loss in the Nagorno-Karabakh War against Azerbaijan last year.

The bloc led by the former president, in a statement, rejected the election results and alleged irregularities in the electoral process, and called for an investigation into the presumed violations.

Turnout in the elections reached 49.4 percent, which was higher than in the parliamentary elections in 2018 and brought Pashinyan’s party to power. EFE
