Police Warn of ‘Zombie Raccoons’ With Distemper
RIVERSIDE, IL (AP) — La advertencia sobre “mapaches zombis” puede parecer algo salido de una serie tonta de televisión, pero un departamento de policía suburbano de Chicago dice que representan un peligro grave para las mascotas.
Los llaman zombis porque los animalitos afectados por el virus del moquillo suelen alzarse en sus patas traseras y mostrar los dientes. El departamento de policía de Riverside dijo que al morder, pueden transmitir a los perros la enfermedad que provoca trastornos respiratorios y gastrointestinales y afecta el sistema nervioso.
El departamento emitió la advertencia tras recibir llamadas acerca de mapaches que actuaban de manera extraña y dijo que quien vea a un animal así debe llamar a la policía. El jefe Tom Weitzel dijo al diario Chicago Tribune que los agentes sacrificarán a los animales y se llevarán los cuerpos.

RIVERSIDE, IL (AP) — The warning about “zombie raccoons” may sound like something out of a bad television show, but a suburban Chicago police department says they present serious dangers to family pets.
The critters are called zombies because those carrying the distemper virus often stagger on their hind legs and bare their teeth. Riverside’s police department says if they bite dogs they can transmit the serious disease that can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal problems and affect the nervous system.
The department issued its warning after fielding calls about raccoons acting oddly and says anyone who sees such an animal should call police. Chief Tom Weitzel tells the Chicago Tribune that officers will put the animals down and public works crews will dispose of their carcasses.
