Saka gets the win for Arsenal, jumping them back into 1st place

Sports Desk, Oct 9 (EFE).- In Premier League action on Sunday, Arsenal downed Liverpool 3-2, Manchester United beat Everton 2-1 on the road, Crystal Palace defeated Leeds 2-1 and West Ham drubbed Fulham 3-1.

In the Arsenal-Liverpool match, nothing deterred Arsenal or stymied the momentum the team has built up as it twice saw its lead erased but then triumphed on a late tally at London’s Emirates stadium before some 60,000 fans.

It was Martinelli scoring first for the home team just one minute into play, but Darwin Nuñez evened things up for Liverpool in minute 34, and there matters rested during the intermission.

After the break, it was Bukayo Saka who put Arsenal ahead once again in the 50th minute but then Firmino leveled the score again just three minutes later.

Finally, on a penalty kick, it was Saka in the 76th minute who scored the third goal for Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The result was Arsenal’s eighth win in nine league matches so far this season and put the team back on top of the Premier League table, leapfrogging over Manchester City – which had temporarily grabbed the No. 1 spot on Saturday – by one point and spurring fans to chant “We are top of the league” after the final whistle.

Liverpool, meanwhile, is in 10th place with 10 points.

In the Everton-Manchester United match, the visitors to Goodison Park before 39,258 spectators found themselves behind just five minutes after the start when the ball got away from Casemiro and Alex Iwobi swooped in for the score.

Man U managed to even things up 10 minutes later when Antony hit on his third tally in three league outings after receiving the ball from Anthony Martial, who went out with an injury shortly thereafter.

Cristian Ronaldo came in for Martial, however, and made the most of it moving in to take the ball from Casemiro and then fire a low shot into the net past goaltender Jordan Pickford just one minute before the break. The score was the Portuguese icon’s 700th career club goal.

After the break, Marcus Rashford scored again for Man U but that goal was disallowed and the team hung on for the duration.

The win moved Man United into fifth place with 15 points, while Everton is in 12th with 10.

In other action, after four consecutive outings without a win, Crystal Palace once again grabbed three ranking points by downing Leeds United 2-1 on a late tally by Eberechi Eze from the edge of the area.

Up until the 76th minute at Selhurst Park, it certainly looked like Crystal Palace would have to settle for a draw. Pascal Struijk had gotten Leeds on the board first 10 minutes into the match by converting the rebound of a Brenden Aaronson shot on goal that missed, but Odsonne Edouard evened things on a header up at minute 24.

Eze put Palace into the win column for the second time this season in minute 76, controlling a deft little pass from Wilfried Zaha and hitting the bottom corner.

The win put Crystal Palace in the 15th spot with 9 points, while Leeds United is in 14th, also with 9 points.

And West Ham came from behind for its second consecutive win, this one a 3-1 result, after Fulham went out in front early on a great play by Andreas Pereira, who got into the home team’s box and fired past Lukasz Fabianski for the 0-1.

But Pereira then fouled Craig Dawson in the box and on the resulting penalty kick Jarrod Bowen easily scored for West Ham after getting goaltender Bernd Leno to jump in the wrong direction.

With things at even-steven, the action settled down to a steadier pace, but the home team went ahead after the one hour mark when Gianluca Scamacca took a lobbing pass from Lucas Paqueta and found the twine.

Miscommunication on defense set up a situation in stoppage time where substitute Michail Antonio was able to sink West Ham’s third goal.
