Air defenses activated as powerful explosions rock Ukraine capital

Kyiv, May 29 (EFE).- Multiple explosions rocked the central part of the Ukrainian capital on Monday, prompting the Military Administration to activate the city’s anti-aircraft defenses to protect it from Russian attacks.

As of 11:45, there were reports of the discovery of six fragments of Russian missiles, according to state-run Ukrinform agency.

The military administration said on Telegram that the air defenses had been activated, and urged all citizens to seek refuge in underground shelters.

“Explosions in the city! In the central districts,” Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said on Telegram, adding that emergency services had been sent to the scene of the blasts.

“In the capital’s Podilskyi district, medics hospitalized one injured person,” Klitschko said, but did not reveal further details about the nature of the injury or the circumstances under which it was sustained.

The explosions come hours after the Ukrainian capital was attacked last night with more than 40 Russian drones and cruise missiles that were shot down entirely by the city’s anti-aircraft defenses.

Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, has asked the residents of Kyiv not to record and publish videos of the interception of Russian missiles or drones by Ukrainian air defenses, in order not to reveal clues about where the projectiles have fallen.

Kyiv on Sunday suffered the biggest attack with Iranian-made kamikaze drones since the beginning of the war.

More than 40 drones were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses in the capital, where one man lost his life as a result of the impact of the fragments.

Over the past month, Russia has stepped up the frequency of its attacks on the Ukrainian capital, which has suffered 16 waves of drone or missile attacks in the month of May. EFE
