North Korean politburo ‘harshly criticizes’ economic agencies

Seoul, Nov 30 (efe-epa).- ‘Harsh criticism’ of economic agencies was head this weekend at a North Korean political meeting headed by leader Kim Jong-un, state news agency KCNA reported Monday.

Members of the political bureau of the Central Committee of the North Korean Workers’ Party gathered Sunday to prepare for a rare party congress called for 2021 in order to design a five-year economic development plan.

The political bureau “harshly criticized the economic guidance organs for failing to provide scientific guidance to fields under their charge,” according to KCNA.

The official news agency did not specify what fields it was referring to, nor did it identify the official institutions, although it pointed to a “failing to overcome subjectivism and formalism in their work.”

“(The political bureau) stressed the need to put the operation and command for carrying out the Party’s economic policies on a scientific basis and display great dedication and responsibility,” it said.

The text also indicated that during the meeting, the party’s politburo pointed out “a series of deviations and major duties of the Congress preparatory committee” and “indicated the orientation for the issues.”

North Korea’s eighth single-party congress is scheduled to take place in January 2021, as reported in August.

On that occasion, KCNA pointed out that the country’s “economy was not improved in the face of the sustaining severe internal and external situations and unexpected manifold challenges” and therefore “the people’s living standard has not been improved remarkably.”

Among the problems the country is experiencing are the economic sanctions applied for the development of its nuclear program, the floods caused by a long monsoon season and typhoons and the border closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. EFE-EPA
