Christie attacks ‘self-serving mirror hog’ Trump in presidential campaign launch

New York City, US, Jun 6 (EFE).- Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie on Tuesday announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 2024 United States presidential election, pulling no punches against fellow candidate, former friend and now foe, Donald Trump.

Christie on Tuesday filed the necessary paperwork to run in the primaries, which will be contested by other Republican candidates including former president Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former vice president Mike Pence, former US Ambassador to the United Nations and ex-South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott and former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson.

At a New Hampshire town hall, at which he formally announced his bid, Christie criticized both Trump and President Joe Biden, saying that they have “divided” the country and made it “smaller.”

When asked about the debt ceiling deal between fellow Republican and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Biden, Christie praised both for averting disaster.

“Governing is about choosing. And governing is about compromise. When did compromise become such a dirty word?” he asked.

The former governor also turned his attention to Trump, to whom he was a longtime friend and adviser before they fell out over the former president’s refusal to admit his 2020 election defeat.

“The reason I’m going after Trump is twofold. One, he deserves it. And two, it’s the way to win,” Christie said.

In contrast to other Republican candidates, Christie didn’t hold back in criticizing his fellow candidate.

“A lonely, self-consumed, self-serving mirror hog is not a leader,” Christie said. “The person I am talking about, who is obsessed with the mirror, who never admits a mistake, who never admits a fault, who always finds someone else and something else to blame for whatever goes wrong – but finds every reason to take credit for anything that goes right – is Donald Trump.”

In response, Trump was quick to criticize Christie, describing him as a “failed governor” in a post on his social media platform.

“His speech was SMALL, and not very good. It rambled all over the place, and nobody had a clue of what he was talking about. Hard to watch, boring, but that’s what you get from a failed Governor (New Jersey) who left office with a 7% approval rating and then got run out of New Hampshire. This time, it won’t be any different!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

A week ago, allies of Christie launched a super PAC to support him called “Tell It Like It Is,” led by longtime GOP advisers. EFE
