New world records set in hurdles, cycling, De Grasse steps out of Bolt shadow

Tokyo, Aug 4 (EFE).- Sydney McLaughlin of the United States broke her own 400 m hurdles world record to win the Olympic gold medal Wednesday with a time of 51.46.

She finished ahead of her compatriot Dalilah Muhamma, whose time of 51.58 also beat the previous record

The bronze medal, with a time of 52.03, a new European record, went to Dutch Femke Bol, who came into the final undefeated this year.

The Italian men’s pursuit team beat its own world record set a day earlier on its way to winning Olympic gold at the Izu velodrome ahead of Denmark and Australia.

19-year-old Sakura Yosozumi claimed Japan’s fifth skateboarding medal, whilst Great Britain’s Sky Brown took the bronze medal at only 13 years old, vaunting her swift recovery from the grave injuries she sustained in a crash in 2020, which resulted in skull fractures and lacerated lungs.

Skateboarder Korona Hiraki of Japan won second place, stopping short of becoming the youngest gold medalist in Olympic history, but cracking the merit of being the youngest medal winner in 85 years.

Andre De Grasse from Canada picked up the 200m gold medal, in the first Olympics since the retirement of Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who had reigned over the discipline for a decade having won every gold medal up for grabs since Beijing 2008. EFE
