62 arrested in South Africa after Zuma’s imprisonment sparks protests
Johannesburg, Jul 11 (EFE).- At least 62 people have been arrested over the weekend in South Africa for a riot apparently linked to protests against the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma, the police said on Sunday.
The violence first broke out in Zuma’s hometown KwaZulu-Natal on Friday after Zuma turned himself to security forces on Wednesday night.
The riot extended last through Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
A total of 25 people were arrested last night in Johannesburg, while 37 have been detained in KwaZulu-Nata since Friday, according to the South African Police Service.
On Wednesday, Zuma turned himself to the police to serve a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court having refused to testify in an inquiry into corruption during his tenure. EFE
