“Watchmen” tops all series with 26 Emmy nods; Netflix snags record haul

Los Angeles, Jul 28 (efe-epa).- “Watchmen,” an HBO superhero limited drama series, leads the way with 26 nominations ahead of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Tuesday.

But Netflix won the battle of the networks against HBO, which for just the second time in the last two decades did not land the most overall nominations.

The nominees were unveiled by comedian Leslie Jones in a virtual ceremony in Los Angeles.

A series created by Damon Lindelof that is a continuation of the like-named 1986 DC comic series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, “Watchmen” has emerged as the Emmy favorite ahead of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Prime Video), which garnered 20 nominations.

“Ozark” (Netflix) and “Succession” (HBO) were next with 18 nods apiece, both of which were among the nominees for Outstanding Drama Series, a category whose finalists also include “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu), “The Crown” (Netflix), “Killing Eve” (BBC America), “The Mandalorian” (Disney+), “Better Call Saul” (AMC) and “Stranger Things” (Netflix)

In the category of Outstanding Comedy Series, the eight nominees are “Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO),” “Dead to Me” (Netflix), “The Good Place” (NBC), “Insecure” (HBO), “The Kominsky Method” (Netflix), “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Schitt’s Creek” (Pop TV) and “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX).

“Watchmen,” for its part, is competing in the Outstanding Limited Series category, which honors programs that are at least 150 minutes long, tell a complete, non-recurring story and do not have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.

Starring Regina King, Don Johnson and Jeremy Irons and centered around a police crackdown on a white supremacist group that wages violent war against minorities, “Watchmen” is joined in that category by “Little Fires Everywhere” (Hulu), “Mrs. America” (FX), “Unbelievable” (Netflix) and “Unorthodox” (Netflix).

In the category of Outstanding Television Movie, the nominees are “American Son” (Netflix), “Bad Education” (HBO), “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones” (Netflix), “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” (Netflix) and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend” (Netflix).

The six nominees in one of the two main lead-actress categories, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, were Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”) “Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Laura Linney (“Ozark) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”).

In the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, the nominees were Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”), Linda Cardellini (“Dead to Me”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”).

Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Sterling K. Brown (“This is Us”), Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”), Brian Cox (“Succession”), Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and Billy Porter (“Pose”) are all in the running for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

In the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, the six nods went to Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), Don Cheadle (“Black Monday”), Ted Danson (“The Good Place”), Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”), Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”).

Jeremy Irons was recognized for his lead-acting work in “Watchmen,” while the other nominees in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie were Hugh Jackman (“Bad Education”), Paul Mescal (“Normal People”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”) and Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”).

The lead actress in “Watchmen,” Regina King, was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie along with Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”), Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”) and Kerry Washington (“Little Fires Everywhere”).

Although an HBO series landed the most nominations for any one series aired on prime time from June 1, 2019, to May 31, 2020, Netflix handily won the battle between those two competitors and secured a record tally of 160 nods overall, followed by HBO with 107 and NBC (whose series include “The Good Place,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “This Is Us”) with 47.

Among the programs that gave Netflix its winning edge were the comedy series “Dead to Me” and “The Kominsky Method” and the drama series “The Crown,” “Ozark” and “Stranger Things.”

Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus also secured multiple nominations in the first Emmys following the launch of their streaming platforms, with the former earning a best drama series nod for “The Mandalorian” and the latter earning nominations in the lead-acting categories for “The Morning Show.”

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, scheduled for Sept. 20, will be hosted by American comedian Jimmy Kimmel and likely be held virtually due to the global coronavirus crisis. EFE-EPA
