Alves accuser calls for 12-year sentence for alleged sexual assault

Barcelona, Spain, Dec 5 (EFE).- Lawyers representing a woman who has accused Brazilian footballer Dani Alves of sexual assault have requested a 12-year prison sentence for the former FC Barcelona star.

Alves has been in jail since he was arrested by Catalan police in January on charges that he raped the woman at a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 30, 2022.

Representing the complainant, Ester García called for a 12-year prison term for Alves, who is due to be tried in court in February in the northeastern Spanish city, legal sources confirmed to Efe on Monday.

The prosecution has called for Alves to be sentenced to nine years in prison if he is found guilty.

Alves has denied the charges.

During the police investigation, the former Barça star changed his account of what happened on Dec. 30 four times.

He first claimed that he did not know the woman, before admitting that had met her in the bathroom of the nightclub, but that they had had no sexual relations.

When the judge confronted him with biological evidence, he said the woman had performed consensual oral sex on him.

Then in April, after tests had found traces of Alves’ semen in the alleged victim’s genitals, the footballer testified that he had had consensual sex and that he had lied to police in order to hide his infidelity from his wife, Spanish model Joana Sanz, who has since ended their relationship. EFE
