Sea Watch appeals for port after rescuing 211 migrants in 2 days

Rome, Jun 19 (efe-epa). Sea Watch rescued 46 people from the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday, its third relief mission in less than 48 hours bringing the total migrants on board to 211.

The German NGO has urgently appealed on social media for a safe port for the rescuees to disembark.

Its team located the wooden barge in the early hours of the morning after receiving a warning from Alarm Phone, an emergency rescue number from boats in distress while trying to make the crossing to Europe.

Sea Watch tweeted: “We arrived just in time as water was already entering the boat.

“Now the total number of guests on board is 211. We need a port of safety immediately!”

Sea Watch has carried out three rescues in the last 48 hours, the first was on Wednesday morning when 100 people were taken on board 29 nautical miles off the coast of Libya.

“Several of the rescued people received immediate medical treatment,” the organization added in a tweet.

Another 70 people were rescued later the same day after Sea Watch’s search plane Moonbird spotted another boat in distress.

The organization said on Twitter that it was a joint operation with the Libyan Coast Guard and an aircraft from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

“More such pull-backs to #Libya, a country at war, are likely,” it added.
