US breaks global record of daily infections with over 1 million cases

Washington, Jan 4 (EFE).- The United States reported a global record of coronavirus cases in one day with over one million new infections reported on Monday, data from John Hopkins University revealed Tuesday.

Over 1.8 million people tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday according to official records, reflecting a spike in daily cases driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The figure is a stark contrast to the seven-day average of daily cases calculated by John Hopkins of 480,273 infections.

Monday’s record is nearly double the previous record four days ago, which stood 590,000 infections.

Amid the sharp increase in cases, US authorities are stressing the importance of vaccination, urging citizens to get their booster shots.

Sixty-two percent of the country’s population has received the full course of the Covid-19 vaccine while 33% have already received the booster dose.

US president Joe Biden and vice president Kamala Harris are meeting on Tuesday with the White House medical advisory team to review the situation.

The US is the world’s worst affected by the pandemic with over 825,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020. EFE
