Los Angeles, United States, Oct 17 (efe-epa).- American Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs has launched a political party centered around Black citizens of the United States, arguing that none of the current parties support the demands of the community.
He named the outfit Our Black Party.
“We can protest all we want, but to win, we have to build our own Black political army. To do that, we have to be trained and organized,” the artist told his 15 million followers on Twitter.
However, Diddy has endorsed Democrat Joe Biden for the ongoing US presidential election to prevent President Donald Trump from getting reelected.
The “Our Black Party” already has a website and a Twitter handle. It asserts that its founders did not establish the outfit just for a single election but to “center the needs of Black people and Black communities in the political process.”
The priorities of the party include inequality in access to healthcare and education as well as a reform of the US criminal justice system and legalization of marijuana.
The party’s founding text says that the Black community is not monolithic and has a right to demand different things according to their needs.
The leaders of the Our Black Party listed on its website include elected local representatives – such as Candace Hollingsworth, the mayor of Hyattsville, a suburb of Washington DC – lawyers and public figures of the community.
In a video interview with Revolt TV, Diddy said his “number one priority was to get Trump out of office” by voting for Biden, but it was also necessary that “going forth, we (Blacks) are part of the narrative, we own our politics.”
“The goal is to unify behind a Black agenda, (…) we have to seize our political power,” said the rapper, adding that unless they addressed their needs, it would be “more of the same” for Black people, “being pushed this way or that way.”
The 50-year-old artist is one of the most successful rappers of his generation, debuting in 1997 and releasing hit albums such as “No Way Out,” “Forever,” “The Saga Continues” and “Press Play.” He has won three Grammy awards, and in 2019, Forbes put his net worth at $740 million.
His foray into politics comes after famous rapper Kanye West announced his independent candidature for the US presidential elections in July.
Some analysts have criticized his bid as a publicity stunt or an attempt to pull Black voters away from Biden. EFE-EPA
