House committee investigating Capitol riot subpoenas Trump allies

Washington, Sep 23 (EFE).- The US House select committee investigating the January assault on the Capitol building announced Thursday it has issued subpoenas to four allies of former president Donald Trump.

Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, Meadows’ deputy Dan Scavino, former acting defense secretary’s chief of staff Kash Patel, and former advisor and campaign manager Steve Bannon have been called to appear at depositions in the coming weeks.

It was perhaps the biggest action the commission, made up of a majority of Democratic congressmen and only two Republicans – Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger – who are at odds with Trump, has taken so far in its investigations into the assault on Congress.

Last month, the select committee asked various government agencies for documents and records related to the riot, including from the White House regarding the movements and meetings that Trump held on Jan. 6.

It also asked telecommunications and social media companies to preserve the phone and computer records of hundreds of people in the event they’re required by the committee.

In a later statement on Thursday, Trump said that the subpoenas were “harassment” and assured that he will fight them.

Officials such as Meadows and Scavino were both with Trump on Jan. 6, while Patel may be aware of his communications with the Pentagon.
