Mexican leader’s image decorates independence-day pastries

Puebla, Mexico, Sep 16 (EFE).- Bakers in Puebla state gave free rein to their imaginations when it came to crafting a special sweet bread to celebrate the 212th anniversary of Mexico’s independence and the result was a “concha,” or shell-shaped pastry, bearing the image of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, commonly known by his initials as AMLO.

Alexander Juarez Dominguez, who created the AMLO-Concha at La Herencia DJ bakery in San Pedro Cholula, a suburb of Puebla city, told Efe that the idea emerged from a conversation with his brother.

The head of state is depicted wearing a suit and tie with the presidential sash across his chest, AMLO’s usual attire for the delivery of the traditional “Independence Shout” from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City.

“We thought of it because the bakery always makes thematic conchas, but when we created this (the AMLO-Concha) we thought it was something natural to have the idea of making a figure this way, but we didn’t imagine the impact it was going to have,” Alexander said.

“People who favor or oppose the president have come to buy them,” the baker said.

Customers from as far away as the northern city of Monterrey and the Gulf port of Veracruz learned of the AMLO-Conchas on social media, placed orders and made the trip to San Pedro Cholula to pick up their pastries, Juarez said.
