Spanish research centre develops rapid Covid-19 tests

Valencia, Spain, May 20 (efe-epa).- A Spanish plastics research centre has adapted its technology to develop rapid Covid-19 tests and reusable masks with changeable filters.

The Technological Institute of Plastic (Aimplas) in Valencia is working to produce quick new blood, urine and fluid tests to detect the virus and FFP2 masks with interchangeable filters.

Amador García, Aimplas technology director, told Efe: “In the market there is nothing like it.”

He added that the two innovative projects have to be ratified and will be put on the market as soon as possible.

García said the technological institute is “at the service of companies and society” and attentive to the needs of hospitals and companies during the outbreak.

Aimplas is “fundamental in advising” on protection materials and searching for new products to tackle the virus, he continued.

“From protective face shields, developing materials for 3D printing of certain parts of respirators, as well as masks and assisting in sourcing,” he added.

He said health systems have been overwhelmed by testing for new infections and that “the availability of rapid tests had to be expanded”.

His strategy was to review all the technology developed over the years to try to respond to the needs that have arisen during the coronavirus pandemic.
