At least 2 killed in knife attack at Islamic center in Lisbon

Lisbon, Mar 28 (EFE).- At least two women have been stabbed to death in an attack at the Muslim Ismaili Center in Lisbon, Portuguese officials confirmed Tuesday.

Several people were injured in the attack, police said, without specifying how many or what their condition was.

Local media, however, reported that four people were seriously wounded, including a professor at the institution, a center for Isma’ilism, a sub-sect of Shiite Islam.

The two fatalities, aged 20 and 40, were working at the center when the attack took place, according to local media, which said the alleged knife-wielding perpetrator was an Afghan national.

The alleged attacker was “neutralized” at the scene, police said.

“The attacker was ordered to stop the attack. He disobeyed and walked toward the policemen,” an official statement said.

Portuguese prime minister Antonio Costa said “everything indicates this was an isolated act.”

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has sent his condolences to the Ismaili community in the Portuguese capital and stressed that investigations were underway.EFE
