Portugal outlines vaccine rollout as Czechia cases surge

Madrid Desk, Dec 10 (efe-epa).- Portugal will vaccinate nearly one tenth of its population in January and February next year, while case numbers in the Czech Republic, the worst affected country in the EU less than a month ago, are surging again.

Meanwhile a study in Italy found that a child in Milan had coronavirus in late November, but he had been wrongly diagnosed with measles, and police in northeast Belgium will use drones with thermal imaging cameras to enforce Covid-19 restrictions and fireworks bans.

PORTUGAL

The coordinator of Portugal’s National Vaccination Plan against Covid-19, Francisco Ramos, has said that the government plans to vaccinate 950,000 people between January and February, out of the slightly more than ten million inhabitants of the Portuguese country.

Ramos told Portuguese public television channel RTP that the first vaccines will arrive in early January and a second batch is planned for February.

The inoculations will be made by Pzifer. Portuguese health authorities are expected to also start using the Moderna vaccine in mid January.

People in nursing homes, health professionals and those at risk will be the first to receive the vaccine.

Portugal will be under a state of emergency – the highest risk level – until December 23 and at Christmas it will ease the restrictions, although travel between municipalities will be banned until the end of the year.

The country’s municipalities currently have several levels of restrictions depending on their incidence at 14 days, such as curfews between 11pm and 5am that in localities with very high or extreme risk, such as Lisbon and Porto, are tightened on weekends (from 1pm to 5am).
