Karol G triumphs at 2022 urban music awards

San Juan, Jun 23 (EFE).- Colombia’s Karol G swept the Tu Musica Urbano ceremony’s third edition Thursday with nine awards, surprising and far surpassing artists who led the nominations such as Bad Bunny.
The main awards won by Karol G in the show, held at the Puerto Rico Coliseum in San Juan, were Artist of the Year, Female Artist Album of the Year for “KG0516” and Video of the Year for “El Makinon.”
The artist, who couldn’t attend the event, also won the Top Social Artist awards, Remix of the Year for “Poblado Remix,” Collaboration of the Year for “Mamiii,” together with Becky G, Top Crossover Song for “Don’t be shy,” Top Trap Song for “No te deseo el mal” and Concert/Tour of the Year for “Bichota Tour.”
For the first time, women were the top winners of these awards broadcast live on the Telemundo channel, with the American Becky G was in second place.
She won four awards in the categories of Top Female Artist, Collaboration of the Year for “Mamiii,” Top Urban Tropical Song for “Fulanito” and Video of the Year for “Ram pam pam.”
With three awards, Daddy Yankee, known as “the boss” of reggaeton, won the awards for Top Male Artist, Top Urban Pop Song for “X ultima vez” and the Male Artist Album of the Year for “Legendaddy.”
El Alfa also won three awards: Top Dembow Artist, Top Urban Tropical Song for “Fulanito” and Top Dembow Song for “La mama de la mama.”
Argentine Maria Becerra won Top Rising Star Female, Song of the Year for “Que mas pues?” and Video of the New Year Artist for “Entre nosotros remix.”
On the red carpet prior to the show, Becerra, who was attending the awards for the first time, told EFE that she was “delighted to be in the cradle of reggaeton together with artists that she admired so much.”
Bad Bunny, who led the awards with 12 nominations, only got two, as did J Balvin, who also led the nominations, Farruko, Christian Nodal, CNCO, Feid and Lit Killah.
The awards included 19 musical presentations, among which Farruko stood out, performing “Nazareno,” and Victor Manuelle with urban singer Miky Woodz in their collaboration “Vamo’ a Ver Si el Gas Pela.”
Farruko won the award for Top Christian Song for “Gracias Remix,” together with Pedro Capo, and received the Dedication Award.
After winning the first prize, he knelt on the platform and assured that it is the “most special” of his career due to his recent spiritual conversion.
And, upon receiving the Dedication Award, the thousands of people who attended the event began to shout “Farru, Farru, Farru,” to which he replied that he preferred that they “shout more at God.”
Victor Manuelle, who received the Contribution Award, granted to those artists of other musical styles who were not afraid to experiment with urban sounds, thanked all the artists of the genre who trusted him when he began mixing salsa and reggaeton in 2004. EFE
