Virtual reality takes center stage at Tokyo Game Show

Chiba, Japan, Sep 30 (EFE).- The Tokyo Game Show video game fair, one of the most relevant in the sector, started Thursday with a partial in-person format, an online conference and a virtual reality platform for fans.

Journalists and “influencers,” the only ones allowed inside, returned to the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, east of Tokyo, to learn about and test the news in the sector and attend some of the talks and conferences, which can be followed online for free.

The show was held entirely online in 2020 and without the possibility of trying demos, which in this edition returned both in person and through various platforms for the public to test remotely.

This year’s program consists of 46 broadcasts from various companies, both industry benchmarks and independent studios that seek through the fair to give greater visibility to their titles. A total of 351 companies participated.

The show had been characterized in its most recent editions before the pandemic by betting on the independent studios, who work very well in Asian markets and are a great attraction for companies with more modest budgets than those with greater international projection.

Among the most innovative proposals raised by the Tokyo Game Show in 2021 is the implementation of a virtual reality platform for fans worldwide.

To use it, people must have a virtual reality device from which to access a space of about 40 stands that can be visited through an avatar, among other activities.

The face-to-face area dimensions are very small compared to previous years. Two of the more than 10 pavilions of the facilities have been used, when almost all are normally used. Companies present are groups with great international projection such as Konami, Capcom, Atlus or Koei Tecmo.

Half of the space has been allocated to meeting rooms with exhibitors or sets with limited capacity from which some of the events of the fair are broadcast.

Organizers have also orchestrated an online concert, the Tokyo Game Music Fes, which will be broadcast Saturday and Sunday in which songs from popular video games will be performed. EFE
