Artist Creates Mural to Encourage Memphians to Protect Themselves and Others During the Pandemic

MEMPHIS, TN (FOX 13) — The message of social distancing and wearing masks has been expressed by leaders and health officials all over. One Memphis man is using his gift of art in hopes that this message is taken seriously.
David Yancy III is an essential worker. He works in construction but he also has a talent as an artist.
Back when the pandemic first hit, he wanted to express how important it is to protect yourself. It took all of four hours for Yancy to complete a mural in the Rozelle neighborhood.
“I just feel grateful to be blessed by God with the gift to be able to share my artwork,” Yancy said.
In these uncertain times, Yancy is using his gift to send a message to Memphians. That message being, even with the city slowly opening back up, we all still need to protect ourselves and others.
Yancy paints pictures to express himself. So, back in March, he was inspired to create an image that fit the times.
The side of a steel shop on the intersection of Rozelle Street and Lamar was his canvas. With a ladder and spray paint, Yancy completed a painting of an African American male wearing an American flag face mask in one day.
Yancy said the image serves as both reminder and appreciation.
Yancy said he hopes the image of those impacted by COVID-19 motivates Memphians to do their part.
