More than 13,000 displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh arrived in Armenia

Tbilisi, Sep 26 (EFE).– More than 13,000 Armenians displaced by Azerbaijan’s recent military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh have arrived in Armenia since their evacuation began during the weekend, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government said Monday.

As of 8am local time on Sep. 26, 13,350 displaced people have arrived in Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh following evacuation that began Sunday, according to a statement by the Armenian government on its website.

It added that housing would be provided for the displaced, many of whom have been sheltered in a humanitarian center set up in the town of Kornidzor, on the border with Azerbaijan, about 150 kilometers from Nagorno-Karabakh.

On Sunday the authorities of the self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh announced that those who were displaced by Azerbaijan’s military operation last week could be transferred to Armenia if they so wished.

These displaced people were sheltered near the facilities of the Russian peacemakers deployed in the territory since the autumn of 2020.

The rest of the citizens who wish to leave Nagorno-Karabakh, especially after Azerbaijan announced its wish to reintegrate the region into its administrative system, will be able to do so after the transfer of those displaced, according to the Information Center of the self-proclaimed republic.
